We want to avoid the long lines for the cable car for Fira. Is there a water taxi service from the cruise ship dock to the dock for Oia?
Not sure what it's like now. There was a service but I read just yesterday that it has changed ownership. That implies it still exists but how it works I can't say. The old service would not depart for Oia until the boat was fully-booked. They have an office on the tender dock so when you arrive you have to go in there to buy your tickets. The dock is small so you won't have any difficulty finding the office.
Thanks, can I make reservations ahead of time?
Not knowing the status of the company, old or new, I can't say. I have no memory of a website for pre-booking but I seem to remember that this water taxi was connected to Dakoutros Travel in Fira. Why not look them up and send them an email to ask for details? If you plan to be there in July or August you might want to wait until you're there to book so you can assess the weather. If the Meltemi Winds are strong that day you definitely wouldn't want to take a boat to Oia.
Reserving ahead is not a very Greek thing to do, especially for this type of weather-dependent service.
I believe the service is run by NST travel----the stand is the Union Boatmen of Santorini and is on the tender dock ---the service they provided was geared more towards cruise ship passengers--it included the boat ride from Fira to Oia---a bus up to Oia from the port and a return bus from Oia to Fira---hope this helps

Unfortunately I don't find any mention of the water taxi on the NST Travel website.
Thanks for all the answers. I've sent a message to NST Travel to see if they run the water taxi.
I just found this review of the NST water taxi service from last year. It's not very encouraging. If the service has changed hands hopefully the new operators are better at it!
I just found this in another travel forum: http://www.aegeantraveller.gr/excursions.html
