We are a family of 4, ( 2adults and 2 children 6 and 12). I am looking at air bnbs and found more affordable rentals in Perissa. Is this too far to the main spots in santorini ? Are they public transportation options to get to these spots.

There is a reason you can get less expensive accommodation in Perissia. Its a beach resort but the main attraction is the caldera view. Yes you can take the local bus to Fira or Oia for the view but sitting on your balcony watching the cruise ships and all the activity in the Caldera is unforgettable.
The beach at Perissia is pumice pebbles and is very hot. The water slopes deep quickly so not great for kids. We tried the low cost Perissia option once but quickly abandoned it and found a hotel with Caldera view.
