Santorini or Crete?

I'm a female, traveling solo to Greece for the first time next month (June) for only 1 week. I know I will spend 2-3 days in Athens but then like to focus the other 3 days on one island. I'm active, enjoy hiking 8-10 miles on a moderate-strenuous level trail, cycling (not long distance), and snorkeling AS WELL AS enjoy sitting on a beach/pooiside/rooftop with wine glass in hand. Question is whether I should go to Santorini or Crete to enjoy the hiking/bike riding/beach? I will not be renting a car.

Thanks in advance for your pro-tips!

Experienced travellers to Greece often suggest that you get out to your first island as soon as you can immediately on arrival. Getting over jet lag on an island is way better than doing it in busy Athens. It is also important that you are in Athens at least the day before your return flight just in case something unexpected happens. We were booked on a flight from Naxos and there was a delay. There were several people madly trying to rebook their flight home because they were not going to get back to Athens in time.

While Santorini is amazing it is also expensive and really crowded when multiple cruise ships arrive. If you choose Santorini look for a hotel in Firostefani. It is just far enough from Fira that most of the crowds do not go that far. Its about a 15 minute walk into Fira.

If you choose Crete I would go to Chania. Its old town and harbour are a delight. You could also consider Rethymnon. Its harbour and old town is smaller than Chania but still a good choice. The bonus is there is a return ferry trip to Santorini a couple of times a week. You can still have the opportunity to see Santorini without having to pay for expensive accomodation.

Yes, I've read that advice about going to the island first then spending the last few days in Athens. Will definitely do that. Thanks also for the suggestions about Santorini and Crete.

We spent 3 nights in Athens first, and for us that was ideal. There's so much going on it was easier to stay busy and adjust to the 7 hour time change, and travel excitement/adrenaline kept us going. Then, when we had our fill of the busy city we moved on to the islands. Between the two of those I preferred Crete.

This was 2019, so take with a grain of salt, but we had the BEST walking food/history tour through greeking.me - our whole family still talks about it.

I have been to both and enjoyed both. Crete is where I would like to go back to. Santorini is beautiful but much more crowded.

We did hiking on both islands. I don’t know if I would bike on either. Roads are narrow and often curvy. I am not sure it would be very safe.

I’ve been to both. Santorini is good for one day. Beaches are non-existent. Expensive, honeymooners.

Crete is glorious but you need a car. Nest beaches I’ve ever seen.

They are extremely different.

I agree with BethFL. Santorini is beautiful and I enjoyed it but I will definitely return to Crete.

I agree with Beth, Emily and Frank II. After a day or so in Santorini you will be ready to move on. Crete as long as you have access to a car is the way to go.

I agree that Crete is a better choice. A car is NOT a requirement …. I’ve happily visited 3 times without one. June is busy so I’d suggest making your decision & reservations quickly.

Santorini is great for a day or two. Like if you are on a cruise of the Greek Islands, which is the best way to see the islands.

Crete is a large island and you could spend a couple of days or a week there.

I love both places, but then again I love everywhere I've been so far in Greece. I feel like people here are being a bit unfair to Santorini. I went for four days and could have stayed much longer. We stayed in Perissa which has a beautiful black sand beach. I would not agree that beaches in Santorini are non existent, it depends what end of the island you go to. Kamari is another nice one.

There is obviously much more to do in Crete since it is a significantly bigger island- in fact, the fifth biggest in the Mediterranean. If you enjoy hiking I highly recommend Samaria Gorge. It's about 10m long. You can get a bus there directly from Chania (which is a beautiful place to stay with a lovely Venetian old town). You walk down into and through the gorge through pine forests and abandoned villages. At the end you get to the beach at Agia Roumeli and have some time to relax there (there are facilities and food- at least there were when we went) before getting a boat over to the next town where a bus will take you back to Chania. Amazing way to spend a day. Honestly I think you will have a good time whichever you choose. Both islands have good bus service (run by KTEL) so a car is not needed.
