Santorini - mid-September

Hi, We have 2 nights to spend in Santorini. I had originally planned on touring Athens and then the next morning heading for Santorini to return the night before our flight home. But after reading in this forum, it looks like it is recommended to arrive back in Athens more than a day ahead of the return flight home. I was hoping to tour Athens on the front end instead.

I know August can be windy - is September a risk as well? What is the recommended mode of transportation to/from? The large ferry is an 8 hour trip and the Aegean flights with the most convenient times are getting very pricey. Anyone have experience with Volotea?

With limited time it's best to fly, and putting up with a little inconvenience for an early or late flight is a small price to pay for experiencing Santorini.

I don't know about Volotea but along with Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air, Ryan Air flies to Santorini from Athens.

Thank you! Is it definitely necessary to return 2 days before our flight home? Our flight departs at 11:00 on 9/21. My original plan was to return to Athens on 9/20. But I sure don't want to miss that 9/21 flight either.

No, I don't think it's necessary to return 2 days before your departure, but it's just safer to save Athens for the end in case of anything going wrong on the island. Those extra days would be welcome in that situation.
