Looking at flights into Athens June 2024 for a cruise. Thought we would go to Santorini for a few days, return to Athens for a couple, then cruise. The cruise ends in Italy, so no Athens return.
The flights seem to arrive late afternoon, evening.
Is it advisable to spend night near airport and transfer in the morning or is it OK to travel to the island later evening?

Athens airport is easy to make connections and generally speaking you should have a 2 hour window to make a connecting flight.
One strategy is to fly with a star alliance member and book book your connecting flight on the same ticket with Aegean/Olympic which is also a star alliance. They make sure you catch your connecting flight.
Santorini is popular so there will be late evening flights available. We always connect to our first island the day of arrival. Getting over jet lag on an island is way better than doing it in Athens.
The capital is fira which has lots of accommodation. It is also popular. You might want to find a hotel in Firostefani. It also has great caldera views but is just far enough away from Fira to bring the price down a bit.
