Santorini in Mid to late May '17

Flying from US to Athens May 16, 2017. 25th wedding anniversary trip. Will fly to Santorini same day. My question is regarding Oia or Fira. I have read every comment and all info online and cannot decide which village to stay in. We are a mid-age couple with a 21 yr old daughter. We enjoy travelling, sight seeing, dining out (inexpensively and expensively). I know Oia is probably where I'd prefer to stay but are worried about the large crowds. Right now I have a booking 10 min outside Fira but really think we should go to Oia.
Are there many cruises in May or are they mostly jun/Jul/Aug??

Also, Ive noticed that prices for mid-range accommodations are more costly in Oia. We have 4 days and do not know if we will ever get the opportunity to go back . Please let me know reasons to stay in Oia and where and if not, why. The other towns are just not on our radar right now.

Since this is really a bucket list trip, I suppose we need to do this right.
Help please!!
Stephanie

If i knew it would not be overrun with cruise shippers at that time it might be helpful. We will be there during the week which is when I hear the cruises dock.

You can find the info about cruise ships in port here. I trust this is accurate; I have no independent knowledge on this subject.

Yes, Oia gets crowded, but not so crowded as Fira. There aren't as many cruise ship arrivals in May as there are later in the season, but it will still be very busy all over the island. You said it yourself, this is a bucket list trip. Don't settle for less than what you really want. Stay in Oia. Use the filter system at www.booking.com to search for the perfect accomodations based on your requirements and budget restrictions.

Last April we visited Santorini and decided to stay in Oia (Zoe Aegeus - www.zoe-aegeas.gr) We made the right choice. It is smaller that Fira and more picturesque. It was also cleaner and more relaxing.
