Santorini back to the US

Hi everyone -
Thank you so much for all of the great advice.
I've seen a lot about connect from the US to the Greek Islands but not a lot about the return.
We were hoping to leave Santorini and fly back to the US with a connection in Athens.
We are able to book the whole itinerary on American (with Olympis flying from Santorini to Athens).
What would be the recommended amount of time we should have in Athens.
I know we will need to go the special security for US departures but will we need to collect checked luggage from Santorini and recheck in at the American counter?

Thanks so much!

A look on the AA site revealed they show single ticket options of JTR-ATH-USA, so they have figured it out for you, ( provided you buy it as a single ticket)

As a single ticket you should be able to check your bags to your ultimate destination and not need to deal with them in Athens.

Mindful of some years ago we flew from Nice to ATL with a change at CDG. Flight was delayed from Nice, we missed our (and all) connections from CDG to ATL. We had thrown basically everything into the bags and checked them home - a one time mistake.
Air France bought us hotel rooms and meals, but make sure you keep your essentials with you.

Meds, toiletries, guide books (we took the train into Paris and enjoyed the evening from memory only). Thankfully Air France got us home the next day. Baggage did not show for 2 more days (at 2 AM in the morning!).
