restaurants to recommend in Chania, Crete?

We are going to be Chania next month and wondered if anyone had any favorite restaurants to recommend. We tend to like causal places with good food. We would like to be able to eat outdoors. We are staying in the old town area.

Thanks!

We like Tamam, behind the harbour in Zampeliou Street. It’s in an old Turkish baths but I don’t think has any outdoor space. It didn’t in the winter when we were there.

At the eastern end of the harbour Christostomos on Ikarou has really good meat and outside tables. The oven cooked dishes - stifado, rabbit - are particularly tasty. It’s on the corner of Ikarou.

I would have recommended both tavernas already suggested. Tamam has tables outside in the alley as well as inside. The outside tables are fairly crowded and people are walking by but that has never bothered us. The biggest pleasure for us is dining outside. If you want a table at Tamam you need to get a reservation.

Another taverna we always go to is Amphora. The food is good , service is good, well priced and the view is great. It is on the west side of the harbour close to the lighthouse..

We rented a house there for two weeks and need to return. Very proud people, they tend to be taller than other in areas of Greece and are very, very proud of their Cretan heritage. They identify as Cretan.
Try to find a book on Crete written about WWII by a shepherd who carried messages to the British during the German Occupation, “The Cretan Runner” by the shepherd, George Psychoundakis. I bought it in a shop in Chania.

Suki- I actually bought that book for my husband for Christmas! He is reading it now. I have read a bit of it.

If you like ‘The Cretan Runner’ you might also be interested in ‘Ill Met by Moonlight’. The film, made in the 50s, is available on YouTube

Most of it is shot in the studio but there are occasional shots in Greece.
