Good morning fellow travelers. We are looking forward to exploring Athens & the Heart of Greece in June. As first time RSE participants, we are enjoying not having to piece these 14 days together ourselves. That being said, there are many free meals while on tour, which we appreciate. Do veteran RSE travelers recommend making advance dinner reservations for free nights now or is it best/possible to stay spontaneous? Thanks in advance.
On our last tour BOE 14, the guide instructed us if we needed to make reservations ahead of time, which was only needed at one city. For the other days / locations we were able to find restaurants with out reservations easily. We are going on this tour in May.. I am not worried about trying to find reservations, I figure we will just wing it and see what adventures await.
Jeff G - Thanks for taking the time to reply and share your experience. Sounds like a good plan! Safe & happy travels.
We did this tour last year in October. We did not make any advance dinner reservations at any our stops while on tour and did not have a problem.
Well, I take that back. In Kardymili, on the second morning, I was able to get 10 other tour members to join us for dinner at a restaurant on a cliffside bluff with a great sea view. So, at lunch time, I went over to the restaurant and asked if they could seat 12 of us at 6:30 pm and they had the table reserved for us when we showed up. And the sunset was fantastic!
Also, on the first night at Kardymili, we wanted to eat dinner at Lela's tavern, right on the beach front. We got there just before sunset, and they were fully booked, but the owner's took pity on us and set up a table in a non-prime viewing spot and sat us. It was a beautiful sunset, but the trouble was, it then got dark and the area we were in had no night lights, except for the candle on our table. We could barely see each other and what we eating, Romantic maybe?
Pre-tour, we wanted to eat a specific restaurant in Athens, so we made advance dinner reservations for the two of us. But otherwise, we did not need advance reservations.
On our last day of the tour, the group dinner was at the same restaurant! And our group took up half the restaurant.
But in in Monemvasia, Hydra, Naplio, we just walked around the seafront, and using Tripadvisor reviews, found excellent restaurants. No reservations needed.
But then again, in Hydra, the same group of 12 had dinner at a port view restaurant and we made advance reservations that morning to make sure they could seat our group. If it was just the two of us, no advance reservations were needed.
Thanks for this info derek. Sounds like you had a fun tour group.
Your guide will know the best places to eat and can let you know if reservations are needed. They are very experienced and in all the tours we have taken they have never steered us wrong.
Thommil01 - Thanks for this glowing vote of confidence for the RSE tour guides! Very reassuring
