Our family heads to Greece on August 18th for two weeks. We'll be in Athens, Crete, Santorini and Milos. We've been watching the temperatures, fire situation, and COVID rise through the news lately but I would love to hear how things are currently from those who are in the country or recently returned. Any thoughts, observations, etc. would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance.

I'm not there but I do see on the BBC news that we - UK - are sending firefighters and equipment to Athens to try to help. I also see a number of out of control large fires and ferries being used to evacuate towns by water as the fire passes through towns and the only way out is from the beach.
I am not in Greece, but have been watching ABC National News this evening. Wild fires in the forests, Athens, island of Evia. Similar info that Nigel reported up thread. Hope all goes well for your family. I miss Greece.
This is a grim account of the mainland fires
Friends on Andros are able to see the smoke from Evvia on the horizon.
This may be of interest on coronavirus on the islands, especially Santorini

Neither am I, but if I had an upcoming trip to Greece, I would seriously reconsider it at the moment. The islands you mention seem to be spared from large fires, but there is one close to the northern suburbs of Athens. And with temperatures above 45°C, I'd go somewhere cooler.
They did wash yesterday and hung it outside to dry. They said that it had ash on it when they took it down.

I have a ticket to Athens for my niece’s wedding on Antiparos for Aug 19-29. With Covid and the fires, I’m going to cancel and hope to travel next year. I just don’t want the stress. 🙁
Greek friends report terribly high temperatures, hazy skies. All unusual.
