Rental Car on Ferry

Hi,

This question has been asked before but it's been a while, so wanted to see if anyone had any recent experience taking a rental car on a ferry, as it pertains to voiding insurance. I am seeing mixed answers and am having trouble getting a straight answer from the rental car company's (Alamo) customer support, most likely it is a bot.

We are planning on picking up a car in Athens and driving it around a bit before getting on the ferry to Kephalonia and then returning the car to Athens.

Thanks,
Michael

You should rent from a local Greek agency rather than Alamo, they're used to this kind of request. Some won't let you take the car on the ferry, while others will, provided you pay extra for insurance, the price of which varies depending on the agency.

FYI, the rental company I use in Athens charges €6 for ferry insurance.

Have you checked if you can bring a car on the ferry? It is not allowed iin many cases and we were not allowed to bring a car on the ferry.
We have had several fabulous tour, mostly with cars.

With ACR (Athens Car Rental) there is no extra fee when you take their car on the ferry. And I experienced very good service when I used them.
Btw: If you book your ferrytickets ahead and obviously you don't know the numberplate of the car you will have, use RENT123 as numberplate for the car.

The company I was referring to is Capital Rent a Car in Athens (they only rent Fords). The rates are more or less similar to ACR's.

Obviously, it's necessary to compare the car type, insurance coverage, excess amount and others specifics terms & conditions to get a fair comparison. There are plenty of other local car rental companies, each with its own terms and conditions.

In general, when renting cars abroad, especially in Greece and Italy, use local companies. You’ll usually get a better rate, they allow cars on ferries and they’re friendlier in general and happy that you used them over a multinational chain from the USA which are usually franchises overseas and not connected to the American company anyway.
