We looked at GATE 1 because they book hotels and transport. But last year my husband(73) drove us around Tuscany and then to Rome for drop off just fine. We like Rick Steve's itinerary. Do you suggest public transport(and we book our own accommodations), GATE 1 transport, or rental car?

I should add we hope to go in May for three weeks, but haven't booked anything at all.

I would recommend renting cars in Greece in each area you visit, Peloponnesean, Islands, Crete, etc. There are buses, but few trains.
If you want a tour, why not Rick Steves’ instead of Gate 1?

We had to reverse the order of our first trip to Greece as there was a huge conference going on in Athens and hotels were full.
You may end up having to book a tour since you are so late planning this trip.
