This is an interesting article. I don’t know all the places mentioned by any means but it’s accurate about the ones I do. Look forward to trying more
Thanks for sharing! I enjoyed learning about the regional differences.
We went to Crete and expected to find the same food as we had enjoyed in the Cyclades and of course it was different. There is some lamb dish (lamb risotto I think) that the waitress said was served at weddings that I have never had any where else. It was wonderful. She made lot of hints to my son and his girlfriend about the wedding part! (They did get married earlier this year,)
Sounds great. Congrats to your son and bride.
The lamb dish will probably have been gamopilafo, literally wedding rice. It symbolises prosperity and is also sometimes served at baptisms.
I almost didn’t read it because I don’t have any plans to be back in Athens. But I liked how it talked about the food itself by region and also mentioned restaurants in that region, as well as where in Athens you can find that cuisine. Because I WILL be back in other areas of Greece, hopefully in the spring or summer.
It made me happy to see the restaurant of my heart, Taverna Gardenia in Kastraki, listed. Simple delicious food and wonderful people.
Thanks for posting this. I just booked our trip to Athens in March and hopped right over to this forum to start the restaurant research!
You'll find wonderful Greek food just about anywhere you go.
Some will be well known to tourists but others not as well known or even heard about.
When traveling to other countries be adventurous and try something you've never had or even knew about like kokoretsi (barbecued sheep organs) don't be shy it's quite wonderful and unique.
If interested check out my Greek Food Photos and Tavernas (some of the tavernas may not still be open) that I've experienced in all my trips to Greece and hopefully more to come.
