Haven't been to Crete. I recommend checking with AutoEurope. They are U.S. based and are a consolidator with quite a few companies. They have a helpful 800 number. My first trip to Europe using a car, we used Europcar. The rental went fine, but then we discovered Auto Europe. I've never found a lower price elsewhere, and I seem to typically end up with Europcar or Avis.

My trip is mid Sept-mid Oct 😂 Still fine tuning my itinerary. I decided to rent a car from Chania to Heraklion. I was originally going to take a bus from Chania to Heraklion to avoid drop off fees. Then rent only in Heraklion. But after talking & reading more about the beautiful sights along the way, I decided I must drive across the island. I’m hoping someone has more insight…maybe there is no drop off fee if on the same island? Hehe 😂that would be wonderful.

Nova, at least half the time with a Autoeurope rate, I haven't paid a drop charge. I encourage you to call Autoeurope and they will have suggestions.

I rented from Auto Rentals Crete this summer on recommendation of several people on this board. I was pleased. They brought car to bus station in Chania for me and I returned it to Irakio airport. The only negative thing is it was a bit tricky to find place to return at airport.
Very reasonable prices and nice people. It is a local company.

There are several good locally owned car rental companies in Crete all with good reputations. Local companies work hard for your business. We have used AutorentalCrete several times. They delivered the car to us at the Chania bus station 3 years ago and we dropped it off at the airport in Heraklion. This year they delivered the car to us in Central Chania near our vacation rental and again we dropped it off at the ferry port in Heraklion. I am not sure but I think they want a 3 day rental for the free drop off in anther city,
