We are planning to take a ferry to Naxos from Athens on our trip at the end of May. For the date/time we want to go, it appears the ferries from Rafina are much faster than Piraueus. Has anyone had a bad experience with the Rafina port?
We go to Rafina fairly regularly and like it. It’s much smaller and easier to handle than Piraeus and has a variety of good places to eat and a lively town square. It’s much more like a port on an island than Piraeus.
We now always stay at the Hotel Avra which is comfortable, has a free shuttle from the airport and a good buffet breakfast. It’s 2 minutes from the main port and five from the boats.
We’ve also stayed in the Corali, pretty much the only other central alternative. It’s a bit more basic and a bit cheaper. Fine for one night if you don’t fancy the Avra.

Thank you! We are actually staying in Athens at the Bretagne and taking a taxi to Rafina. Then, when we return, we are hoping to take a taxi to a car rental place close to Rafina and then driving down to Nafplio. The ferry out of Rafina is 3 1/2 hours to Naxos, and the one from Piraeus at the same time is over 6 hours - a big difference.
Rafina is a quite good port. No issues except if you have to park.
Much better from Rafina than piraeus
