Question about when to by Acropolis museum ticket, carrying passport, and Epidaurus Festival ticket

Hello, We are going to Athens, Santorini, and Sifnos in mid July. Should I always bring my passport with me instead of leaving it in the hotel in Athens? and how about Santorini and Sifnos? I was thinking leave my passport in my luggage in the hotel.
I also saw that US citizen doesn't need a visa, and ETISA is not online until 2026. Is there another online system that US citizens need to fill out, or I can just land in Athens with my passport?

I bought the Acropolis ticket for 8 am. How long does it take to see all the sites in Acropolis? Since the Acropolis Museum ticket is also timed, I'm not sure if I should by 10am or 11am for Acropolis Museum.

Has anyone purchased tickets from Epicurus Festival? I want to go to the concert in the Odeon of Herodes. But they either don't have the 'Buy Ticket' button, or the button doesn't work. I emailed them but never heard back from them. Here is the website: https://aefestival.gr/schedule/?lang=en&?category=&place=136&schedule_year=2025

Sorry for the long questions. Thanks so much!

For the Epidaurus (not Epicurus) Festival, use the other official website; more.com.

It's working.

I don't see where you would absolutely need your passport during your stay in Athens or on an island.

The only situations I can see that probably won't apply to you are if you have an uncompleted ferry reservation in your name and need to pick up your tickets at a travel agency, or if you're entitled to a discounted fee based on your age and/or nationality.

At worst, scan it and have the document accessible on your phone.

The time spent on the Acropolis hill is entirely up to you.

An enthusiast can spend hours studying each stone one by one, the intentional irregularity of the Parthenon's columns, and checking whether the golden ratio applies where it's supposed to. Others don't care about what they see and spend just enough time to take a few selfies.

Let's say that between these two extremes, you can expect between 1.5 and 2 hours.

Thank you so much! I was able to buy the tickets!
I just want to have some sense that it's safe to leave the passport in the hotel. Sounds like it should be fine.

Thank you!

Kodiak, you can just carry a color photocopy of the main page of your paasport, folded in your billfold or inner pocket of your day-bag ... I've done that on 13 Greece trips, never needed to show it, but it made me feel more "prepared" just in case.

We will be in Athens and staying near the Acropolis museum. I am curious about the timed tickets to both the acropolis and the museum. We were wanting to do the museum our arrival day afternoon and the acropolis the next day. Will this be an issue.

Should I always bring my passport with me instead of leaving it in the hotel....

In our opinion, yes! Others will differ, and that's ok. And the final decision is your's, and that's ok also. But consider the following.

On three different trips a tour member suffered a medical emergency and was taken to the hospital. None of them had their passport. It wasn't the end of the world in any of the cases, but it did cause a number of problems that could have been avoided had they had their passport with them.

One time we were (through no fault of our own) caught up in a political demonstration. Another time we experience an earthquake. Either one could have prevent us from returning to the hotel.

Hotels have been know to experience fires, earthquake damage, flood damage, other storm damage, and (although rare) theft of luggage and / or the contents of the so called "safes".

A well traveld individual once posted on this site something to the effect that " As long as I have my passport and credit cards, I can handle anything that arises".

We subscribe to that idea and always have them with us. We are not paranoid, but do respect Murphy's law, and excercise what we think is just good old common sense. We had rather have them and not need them, than need them and not have them.

Just offering food for thought.

@TC- I completely agree with you on every point you made and I’ll go one further. My wife and I are very well seasoned travelers and in every country we’ve traveled to we’ve always kept our passports on our person. In Italy it’s a little different since my wife is Italian and we usually spend the Italian portion of our European vacations with her family. For those days I usually carry a copy of my passport only. When we’re anywhere but Italy we carry our passports with us, and yes, even on Greek islands and in Athens, because, as the saying goes, you just never know. It’s also the law in most countries and, to be quite honest, a copy just won’t cut it with officials.

This totally makes sense of carrying passport. Thank you so much for sharing your experience.
