private guide in Nafplios? taxi from Athens to Nafplios? Good places to stay in Nafplio?

My husband and I are travelling from Athens to Nafplio, and are considering taking a taxi the whole distance to reduce transfer hassles when we are tired (we are flying in from Canada). Does anyone know how much this might cost?

We would like some friendly tips from a private guide once in Nafplio, since we will rent a car at that point, and visit various sites. This does not need to be extensive, just a nice planning chat, tips on car rentals, ferries, roads. Does anyone know such a person? What would we pay, in rough terms? Thank you.

Finally, I have read one review in these postings of an excellent place to stay in Nafplio called the Rigio Pension. I am open to other leads and contacts, whether they be Pensions, small hotels, or B and B set-ups. We would like to be near the Old Town. Our time of travel would be mid-March.

Thanks for your time in responding to one or all three of these questions!

Johanna,

My husband & I will be heading to Nafplio 3/19/19 - 3/21/19. We are taking the bus (23 EU r/t) from Athens. We booked 2 nights at the Althaia Pension, 20 Vassileos Konstantinou in Old Town Nafplio. The double balcony room was just 127 EU.

I found a great site for all things Nafplion: www.visitnafplio.com/nafplio-old-town.html

I stayed at the Marianna Hotel in Nafplio and really enjoyed it. My room felt more like a mini-suite, and there was even a place to sit outside the room and relax. The breakfast buffet was quite good and the owners were very nice. I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.

I took a bus between Nafplio and Athens, and it was a fairly long ride. Google maps says it's 167km from the airport to Nafplio taking about 2 hours on the expressways, which I imagine would be a very expensive taxi ride. The 15-20 minute taxi ride I took between 2 towns cost around 15 euro, so I'm guessing a 2 hour taxi ride on toll roads (plus driver having to return to Athens) could cost a couple hundred euro.

I wanted to thank the last few people as well as those who first responded. We are just confirming the air flight dates now, so all of these details will help us. I am encouraged by the range of accommodation I have seen at reasonable prices. Thanks again! Johanna in Canada

If you want to go straight to Nafplio after landing in Athens then a taxi or other private driver will be the easiest but most expensive.

When we went to Nafplio we arrived in Athens then stayed one night and took the bus the next day. The bus was clean, safe and very inexpensive and dropped us off at the bus station in Nafplio just outside the Old Town. It was very cost effective and low stress.

However, if budget is not a problem then get a taxi or private driver.

Visiting various areas in and around Nafplio is very easy and do-it-yourself. There are numerous guide books and websites that can help you and save you money. The visit naplio website is outstanding and will tell you everything you need to know about Nafplio and surrounding area.

We stayed at Hotel Leto a number of years ago and the owner George was wonderful but I have heard the hotel was sold and the service not quite as good as it once was.

I also have heard very good things about Pension Marianna which we walked by on our strolls in the Old Town. Looks very good. However, there are many others and it all depends on your budget and needs.

Since you are going mid-March most accommodations will have off-season prices so you may get more "bang-for-your-buck" on where to stay.

BEST location in Nafplio is Hotel Agammemnon, http://www.nafplioagamemnon.gr/en/ just about the only one that has balconies directly on the water. Not a huge hotel, not fancy, but solid value... the top recommend by my friend Merete, creator of the superb & noncommercial website http://www.visitnafplio.com/ Friends & are staying there early June. NOTE: I booked direct w. hotel but I advise you to reserve thru booking.com or similar agency using your CC ... if you book direct they want a bank-transfer for deposit which is a huge hassle. Also, Booking.com doesn't require adv. deposit, either.

Note re transport --- I have taken the bus to Nafplio many times, and it's just fine ... clean, modern, upholstered reserved seats, heating or a/c depending on dates. You taxi from central ATH hotel to Kifissou KTEL Terminal, busses go express (on stop outside corinth), hourly on half-hour, take 2.5 hrs.... arrive terminal 30 mins before departure to buy tickets. Good plan to rent car when in Nafplio because you'll see more, more flexible. Used to be local tours of Mycenae &Epidaurus, but no more. After booking yr hotel, you can contact hotelier & arrange for car, or just wait til you get there... 1st day you'll be exploring old town, museum etc.
