Prescription Medication Question

Hi! I have a 2 week trip to Athens, Mykonos and Santorini starting May 1 and am wondering about my pain med prescription. I am on a low dose daily rx of Hydrocodone for chronic low back issues due to numerous surgeries. I've read a few things about the Opium Act and Schengen countries but can't find a straight answer about whether a specific document is required or suggested or if just a written prescription from my doctor will suffice.

Any suggestions from seasoned Greece travellers out there???

Much Thanks!!

it would be best to travel with all the meds you need. filling prescriptions in Greece would mean that you must see a doctor and then a pharmacist - who will not accept anything without a local 'script. i don't know how easy it will be for you to see a private doctor there OR what it would cost. in Greece, they are not 'free and easy' with drugs of any nature.

It would be prudent to take the prescription bottle with you.

You should inform your Doctor and Pharmacist about your trip. They should be able to design a dosage regimen that would cover for the trip. And if there's any need for any document, they might also be informed. Sometimes, it can be hard to get refills for some medication in some places.

Thanks for all the information - I have no plans of having to get anything filled while in Greece but really wanted to make sure I wouldn't have a problem travelling with the prescriptions I have. I contacted the Greek Embassy in Washington DC and learned a lot about the certificate needed and getting an Apostille Stamp on it for the narcotic meds.

Thanks again!!!

Get a letter from the prescribing doctor on official letterhead stating what the medicine is (both brand name, if prescribed that way, and generic name), how much is to be taken per dose, and what the drug is used for.

Keep all narcotics in the original bottle from the pharmacy. The label is the prescription.

Don't take more than would be reasonably expected to be needed for the duration of the trip. In other words, if you get a 90 day supply (unlikely for most narcotic prescriptions) and will be visiting for only 14 days, take only what you need plus a couple days in case you get delayed. If you explain to the pharmacy your travel plans, they are usually happy to give you a smaller bottle with a duplicate label you can fil with the number of pills you need to take so that you are not overloaded with huge medicine bottles.

And as long as you answer the questions on the immigration forms truthfully, you probably will not even be questioned.

Do you think going through the trouble of getting the Apostille Stamp from my State is even necessary?

Never heard of that before. Seems to be similar to a notary certification, just on a more official level. I can't answer if that would be needed.
