We're planning a three week trip to Crete in September/October does anyone have accomodation recommendations in Rethymno, Souyia and Thronos area? Thanks
Hi weeks5, it all comes down to what you are looking for. Are you traveling solo, as a couple, or as a family? Do you prefer 3, 4, 5* or boutique accommodations? Do you prefer staying in towns or by the beach?
In Sougia, we love Oceanis. Simple rooms with a huge tree-shaded courtyard, across the road from the beach.
We stayed at aravanes in Thronos. We stayed only one night. We regretted that. They also have a fantastic restaurant where we enjoyed dinner.
I don’t recall where we stayed in Sougia but you will enjoy wherever you stay. It is a wonderful place. We only stayed 2 nights and regretted that.
Otherwise, we thought we allocated our nights about right. Those were the only two places we wished we had more time.
Since this trip is getting into the late part of the season I suggest you might want to plan getting to Sougia as soon as you can before the village starts to close up. There are a couple of buses daily from Chania. Will you be driving? The trip across the white mountains is spectacular.
We have stayed at Oceanis several times. Its a pretty plane simple plain hotel but the sea views are spectacular. As mentioned it has a delightful courtyard with lots of shady trees.
Sougia has good beaches, with some sea caves at the cliffs to the east side of the village.
It also has three of our favourite Tavernas. Rebetiko,Anchorage and Polifimos. We always stay at Sougia for 4 nights so we can eat at these tavernas and then choose the one that we liked the best for the 4th night.
Rethymnon should be you last stop as it will have a lot more activity than the smaller villages in October. I would look for a hotel along the waterfront with sea views.
