We are looking for a smaller bnb type place to stay in Athens, it does not need to be fancy, just clean and comfortable. Any suggestions?
Do a search on Airbnb and you'll find something in a range of budgets.
I would recommend one of the Greek neighborhoods like Thessio, especially the side streets to stay as it's quiet and has a good selection of shops and tavernas where you'll find more locals than tourists.
It's also close to everything one goes to Athens for.
I'm sure there are other outfits like this one, but I found the apartments to be spacious,
clean, and well located.
You don't say when you plan to go, but the A/C worked very well, which is very important
in the summer months.
Going to Athens every year for 4 to 5 days and always staying in Airbnbs, I can give you, via private message, some suggestions and suitable addresses for studios or apartments for 2 to 4 people.
Since we like to meet locals, these are all accommodations managed by individuals (more than 70% of Airbnbs in Athens are now managed by professionals).
I no longer post them on the public forum, I've noticed they become too popular.
I am afraid of vrbo and airbnb. We used them on our last trip, chose ones with good ratings, the pictures looked good and they were no bueno! So I have PDST LOL
JoLui, I would love your recommendations, in a private message
I stayed at the Acropolis View Hotel on a recommendation from this forum. I was not disappointed. Great location, reasonable price, killer views.
Denise, booking dot com may now have what you want, since it now has much more than hotels, has small apts, in great areas, at prices often lower than moderate hotels in same area. Why I recommend this over the VRBO etc, is that they have better guarantees, and cancel-without-penalty provisions, and more upfront information as to services, check in/out time, and no nonsense about advance deposit via bank transfer. I recommend browsing using the Filter "Landmarks - Acropolis" - that lists each property in terms of how far from Acropois iit is. Also, when you enter your dates and a list pops up, always click the icon "show on map" and it shows ALL availables exactly where they are in Athens, not a blurred-out area.
For browsing, I love this Athens Map - https://tinyurl.com/ycd2mx83 - better than google. less confusing, clearly shows heavy-traffic avenues vs tiny lanes, and which are pedestrian-only. I tend to like area just below Acropolis precinct & jst to right... lower Plaka or Makrigiani. Its low-rise, many trees, no big roaring avenues, and SO convenient... just steps to S. entry to Acropolis (#73 on map) and to Acrop Museum (#24 on map).
We stayed at Feel Athens at Monastiaki in a 1 bedroom apartment with a view of the Acropolis (from our balcony) in September. It had new furnishing, very clean and a good location. We even had complete maid service half way through the week. I booked through BC. We were very pleased and even got use to the sketchy elevator.
