We will be driving in September from Olympia to the Athens airport. Google maps indicates that it is about 3 3/4 hour drive. What can be recommended for stops en route and is there a good place to stay in between if we wanted to do shorter drives? We will have passed through Corinth on our way from the airport to Nafplion earlier in the trip. Would it make sense to save visiting ancient Corinth for when we are returning back toward Athens and stay nearby?
Thanks.
One place I loved was the Stemnitsa area. It would make your drive longer overall though--and just a stopover may not give you time to see the monasteries that make the area especially appealing. I stopped at Nemea en route from there to the airport.
Let us know the entire itinerary so we can better advise. You could also stop near Sparta and take in Mystras.
Thank you Valedelphia.
Our itinerary at this point is as follows;
Day 1- arrive Athens airport, transfer to hotel then three nights in Athens.
Day 4- pick up rental car and drive Nafplion for 3 nights (visit Corinth, Epidaurus and Mycenae)
Day 7- 1 night Monemvasia
Day 8- Drive Gythion 3 nights (explore Mani and visit Mystras)
Day 11-drive Lagadia or Vytina and stay 2 nights
Day 13- Olympia 1 night
Day 14- ??? Visit Corinth if not visited on Day 4. Stay in Corinth?
Day 15- return rental car to Athens airport, fly to Naxos for 3 nights
Day 18- fly to Athens, stay near hotel
Day 19- fly home to US
So it’s really day 14 we’re trying to figure out.
Nemea might make for a nice one night stop then--It's right on the route, and there are lots of wineries in the area so likely nice lodging, plus the site itself as a companion to Olympia. Save Corinth for that part maybe?
