We're looking for a local taverna in Pireaus with good food where the locals eat. We want to avoid the glitz tourist places. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Vassilenas was recommended to us by Greek friends but we never got the chance to eat there.
That reminds of an encounter we had one time in a bar that we stumbled into because it was very busy -- A person at the next table had engaged in little, friendly conversation when we sat down. I said to him, "Looks to be very popular with the locals." His response. "Ya, it is. Food is not very good but it is cheap." And he was correct. Careful what you look for.
Wander around between the metro station and the ferry port area including the blocks east. We spent a couple of nights there back in 2016 - it wasn't very touristy and not much glitz.
Nowhere along the main road from the metro station is worth recommending. It’s best to walk a few minutes inland.
Noe, at 18 Notara is a nice place with music at weekends.
Or for somewhere that’s basic but tasty you could try Takis Kebabs at 33 Ethnikis Antistaseos. More a cafe than somewhere you’d spend an evening out. There are photos on Google Maps which give a fair idea.
Of course, it’s anyone’s guess which restaurants will survive the current COVID crisis. You’d be wise to check nearer the time.
