Peloponnese Peninsula Info

Hello there,
My husband and I are planning a trip to Greece in late April thru late May. After starting out in Athens for 5 days we are driving to Nafplio. We plan on staying in Nafplio for 4 nights and do day trips to ruins & sites from there. We are unsure about out next stop, which at this point is Gythio. We can see a bit of the Mani, but are not interested in driving around a bunch. From there we are planning a 4 night stay in Pylos to explore the ruins in that area. Then back to Athens to fly to Santorini and other islands.

We are not beach people, although we love to stay near the water. We are interested in historical sites, good food, and relaxation. Any comments on changes or additions to this part of our itinerary? Is this too much driving? Thanks for any help!

I don't see why you would change your itinerary, which, for once, has the merit of not being overly ambitious. After all, I assume you chose these three base locations based on the specific things you want to see and do, as well as travel times.

Be wary of advice that suggests adding more stops or sights, the more you add, the less you will actually see.

Note that May 2, 2027, is Greek Orthodox Easter Sunday, so sites and museums will be closed. May 1st is also a public holiday, meaning sites and museums will be closed. Opening hours may also be subject to change on April 30 (Good Friday).

On one of my trips to the Peloponnese I did Nafplio, Gythio and Petalidi which provided a good example of the east and south of the Peloponnese.

I had been to Nafplio several times and went to places I missed on previous trips. Wonderful base to explore the Argolis which has more to offer than just Nafplio.

I really enjoyed Gythio and it was much better than I expected and provided a wonderful base to explore the Mani, Mystras and a quick day trip to Monemvasia.

Petalidi is off the tourist map and a nice Greek village with a long waterfront and I was able to visit Messene one of the best and least known archeological sites in Greece plus day trips to Koroni, Methoni, and Pylos plus some of the mountain villages.
