Patras?

My husband and I have spent quite a bit of time traveling around Greece. In April/May plan to spend a couple of weeks exploring the Ionian Islands (mainly Kefalonia).

We like cities and Thessaloniki is one of our favorites but for this trip, it just doesn't fit the itinerary. We could spend a few days in Patras after taking the ferry from Argostoli. Has anyone spent time exploring Patras? If so, how does it compare to other larger Greek cities?

We mainly travel for food, wine, light hiking and museums.

Thanks for any insight!

Not been there in years, so really will not say one way or the other. There are both Roman and Greek ruins, as well as some Venetian influence in architecture, some museums, and the area is known for it's wine.

But it does get short billing, most (like me) really only go through to catch a ferry or arrive and on to Athens. My attitude would be that I could find enough to do for two or three nights about anyplace, so why not.

Thanks Paul...former Iowan here...might be my rural Iowa background that makes me anxious to explore the world!?

We are sort of thinking along the lines of what you've suggested. We liked Ancona and it seems like a similar port town.

Cheers!

We’ve been to both Thessaloniki and Patras twice in the last decade. We enjoyed Patras but it doesn’t really compare with Thessaloniki. Although it’s the third largest city in Greece it’s about half the size of Thessaloniki by population and has nothing like the range of museums and sites.

Some good points: the centre is pedestrianised with a pleasant bustle of city life, the Roman theatre is a beautiful (but small) site, and the area around Trion Navarchon has a neighbourhood feel with a range of pleasant local restaurants and bars.

On the downside it seems too have turned its back on the sea. The front of the city is mainly blocked from the sea by an old railway line and you have to walk to the city’s edge before you get the possibility of a seaside stroll.

I’m not necessarily trying to put you off. We went back because we enjoyed it, and may well go again. Essentially though it’s a small provincial town rather than a city and you can walk the three or four main streets in not much over an hour.

Taken as a small town it’s a pleasant place to wander with the usual advantages of anywhere in Greece - friendly people, a relaxed atmosphere and nice food.

Thank you Alan! That's a very good assessment and I appreciate understanding how it might compare to Thessaloniki. We will probably spend a couple of nights there to check it out! It helps to know what to expect!

You’re welcome. A couple more thoughts

The Patras Mycenaean Park at Voudeni is worth a visit. It’s tricky to get to without a car though

You might want to consider the Diakopta - Kalavrita railway as a trip. The rack and pinion railway to Kalavrita is spectacular. This is an easy day trip with a car but you can also get to Diakopta by bus and the journey takes about an hour. Depending on bus times you might need to stay overnight in Diakopta which is a nice seaside village.

In Patras itself we liked Fork as a restaurant
