Paleochora

We will be on Crete for 12 days splitting our time between Chania, Elafonissi, Rethymo and Heraklion doing day trips from there and we were wondering if it is worth it to go to Paleochora and stay the night? Just go from Elafonissi for the day and then head to Rethymno? Or skip it altogether

It may be due to the fact that it was very windy when we there last September and/or that we did not love our accommodation, but Paleochora was our least favorite stop in Crete. Chora Sfakion Is lovely. Maybe take a look there?

Paleochora is often windy but as it's located on a peninsula it is possible to avoid the wind (most of the time) by moving to the side that's less windy at the time.
Paleochora has many fans. It's laid back, good value for money, offers some excellent beaches in and nearby but it's never been a pretty or culturally interesting village. For one night I wouldn't bother. For longer stays it has the above to offer.

We love the tiny town of Sougia, on the southern coast maybe 30 minutes east of Paleochora. It’s very walkable, with lots of tavernas along the sea. It has limited hotels though so you’d want to make a reservation quickly.
