Over water Bungalow departing from Greece....where would you go?

HI Everyone,
After a seven night cruise ending in Athens where would you go for a over water bungalow for a week.
Flying from Athens to ??? Then after a week back to the USA.
Appreciate your ideas.....

Are you looking for a place in Europe? Asia? Caribbean? Have you researched the options - where are they available?

Really depends on you, your interests, your budget.

There aren't a whole lot of places where "over water bungalows" exist. Most of them are pretty far away and not quick/easy to get to, and they're all seriously expensive. In Greece? None that I'm aware of (none anywhere close, either, AFAIK).

If the considerable cost and distance doesn't dissuade you, the places where you'll find most of these are French Polynesia (Tahiti, Moorea) and the Maldives. Very nice places, with very, very high costs for everything - caution, you're going to need pretty deep pockets for this. I'm not sure this makes much sense for most people, but if you've got it and you want to spend it that way...

Good luck.

Agree with past replies. You didn't give the month of your trip, which makes a difference. I think you may have the mistaken idea that Greece is somewhere near the Maldives. You know it isn't near Bora Bora or the Caribbean. There certainly are luxury resorts in southern Europe, but most of us on this board would want to see the culture and history of Greece after this cruise, not sit in a VIP housing project. (I'm not sneering at you, we go to the Caribbean all the time!)

If you're from a landlocked part of the US, and you're looking for a lovely beach, I hear there are plenty in Greece. There are luxury resorts in Turkey, Italy, Montenegro, Croatia, and many other places. (The water can be cold!) I personally find the Balearic Islands overbuilt, but because it's "on the way home", you might investigate that as an idea. But having to get to, say, Madrid for a flight home will chop a whole day out of your vacation.

Edit: It takes 8-9 hours to fly to the Maldives from Greece. That is near the time to fly from New York to Athens.

Over water bungalows are more typically associated with the Caribbean, south sea islands, etc. I have no memory of any place of over bungalows in the Aegean Sea or off of any the European med coast. Good luck with your search.

It's true that Greece is not THAT far from the Maldives (relatively speaking - the maldives are pretty far from almost everywhere, which is part of the appeal).

Getting to the Maldives is actually not that hard. I just booked flights there myself a few days ago, going next New Years (not staying in an overwater bungalow). So have some recent experience with figuring out ways to get there. In my case, I will be in Bangkok anyway (for Christmas) so getting to the maldives from there is quite simple and not terribly expensive. Getting there from Asia is easy and surprisingly cheap. From major cities in Europe you can fly there with just one connection. From North America...well, that's more of a project to get there.

There are actually cheap flights to the Maldives from several Asian locations, and it looks like mass package tourism is now a thing there (proximity to India, China, and SE Asia driving that) so it's not just for Russian oligarchs and the .001 percent anymore.

But when you get there, hold on to your wallet! When I go there next winter, I will be staying on a boat, scuba diving for a week (not exactly cheap either, but not crazy like the land-based resorts). Just for grins I looked at some land-based resorts for a few days of dry time after we get off the scuba boat. Most places I found were well over $1000/night (and that's for the cheap rooms), so we quickly laughed and decided we would not need to spend any time on the ground there; we will only have a few hours at the airport coming and going, otherwise we'll either be on the boat or flying in and out from Bangkok. It certainly does look lovely, but it's a pretty expensive place to while away the hours looking down at the fish from your room.

Back to the OP: You should be sure what you're asking for. The photos of overwater bungalows look beautiful, and they are. I once stayed at a place in very remote Indonesia in a cottage over a lagoon. Yes, it was wonderful to step out from my room, and just step down into tropical water with pretty fish. I still dream of that place. But you pay a LOT for this experience. Check the cost before you get your heart set on it.
