Hi there,
We will be driving in Greece in July from Athens airport to Nafplio and then to Delphi and back to airport for drop off. We had been hoping to use Athens Car Rental, but they wrote a very nice note explaining they were out of cars and that they did not know for sure when their new car shipments would arrive. So, my question is whether people have other recommendations for (or against) other car rental agencies. Thanks!
I had no problem with Hertz in 2019.
The go-to for many posters is AutoEurope. Generally great prices, excellent customer service, based in Portland, Maine.
In addition to AutoEurope, there is the sister company Kemwel that is sometimes cheaper. I know they are all the same company because we rented thru Kemwel but I called AutoEurooe when we had an issue. I’ve also used Sixt and I believe Avis in Greece.
Another recommendation for AutoEurope. They stand behind their customers.
We rented from Pop’s Car Rental in 2018, as recommended in the Rick Steves guidebook. Although the name “Pop’s” sounds like it’s maybe a small-time operation, they actually have several offices around Greece, and we even rented from one location (Ermioni) and returned at another (Athens airport). Car was great, so was the price.
We are using Sixt from the Athens airport in July to Nafplio. I did a cost comparison and it was a little more money($50ish) but we did take the zero deductible and covered tires and glass and something else. Basically we bought everything extra, which we never do, just decided we wanted to not worry about what ifs while driving in a foreign country- that is already stressful.
Just back last week from Greece where we rented a car using Avis at the Athens airport, drove to Nafplio via Mycenae (it's on the way), visited Epidaurus and returned the car to the airport. Reasonable, brand new car and Avis was within walk to the terminal distance.
If you need help, this travel agency is fantastic. They arranged our car rental, airport hotel and Covid testing. Polite, tolerant, quick to respond and corresponded in excellent English. www.allabouttravel.gr
Thanks all for the advice. Autoeurope prices were high, so decided to go with Pop’s. Will let you know how it turns out .
In Athens (and Thessaloniki) there is a very good car rental company very popular with European customers:
Capital Rent a Car. (they also have a few cars with automatic transmission)

The rates are much cheaper than those of the major international companies.
All the cars are Fords because the boss's brother owns a Ford dealership.
We have a paid reservation for ACR in October, we have never used them and now wonder if I should be concerned.

So, how did it go?
