My husband and I are Marriott rewards members and were hoping to pay with points. Any thoughts on these Marriott properties in Athens? We'd like to be walkable to restaurants, markets and shopping. Of course we want it to be a safe area too! Do any of these fit my needs? (I don't care about hotel dining)
The Grand Bretagne and King George are both 5-star hotels located right in the middle of town. I haven’t heard of the other two but anything in the Autograph Collection is going to be very nice. Check the room prices vs. the number of points and if the ratio is better than for most Marriott properties then use the points and stay there. We did that a couple years ago in Venice and stayed at a hotel that otherwise would have been way too expensive. Good luck with the trip!
The Moxy Athens City is a fairly new hotel (opened in 2022) overlooking Omonia Square.
It is a bit far from the main sites like the Acropolis (30 minutes walk) and I am sure that the Omonia district, although undergoing gentrification in recent years, will not please you for a first visit to Athens. Many will tell you that the area is not safe, which is no longer entirely true.
The Academias Hotel, Autograph Collection is better located from a neighborhood point of view but also relatively far (30 minutes walk) from the main sites.
The King George and the Grande Bretagne are the best located, on the same block overlooking Syntagma Square, the epicenter of Athens when visiting the city.
So from a location point of view (never been to these hotels) I would say:
First: King George or Grande Bretagne
Second: Academias Hotel
Third: Moxy Athens City
