Only 1 week in Greece

Greetings all - I tried to look through the forum to find answers but everyone's itinerary is so different.

Anyway, background for the questions looking to be answered:

Spending 1 week in Greece in October 2027;
Plan on spending 2 nights in Athens;
Then renting car in city center Athens (read in one forum post better than airport which is the other direction)
Driving to Nafplio to use as home base [4 nights] for day trip to Mycenae and a different day trip to Epidvaros. Other days guide or enjoy Nafplio.
Plan on day trip to Hydra
Drive back to Athens and fly to Rome and then home [no direct flight ]

Questions:

Question - go to Hydra from Athens or Nafplio?
Spend one less night in Nafplio and/or Athens and fly out of Athens to Santorini (about $250 roundtrip for 50 minute flight) to Santorini? [ Spend one night in Santorini].

Thanks for any helpful replies!

Hydra is easier (or always has been, maybe recent changes) from Athens than from Nafplio. Mainly just due to having many more options to get to Piraeus port, and then the frequency of the ferries to Hydra from Piraeus. From Nafplio, you take a bus to either Metochi or Ermioni then a ferry, hoping that both bus and ferry somewhat match their schedules.

Whatever way you go, figure on a solid two hours of travel, not including wait times.

Thanks Paul.

Any preference for the boats to Hydra? Catamaran, car ferries, car catamarans?

Thanks.

Do you have a preference regarding the boats to Hydra? Catamarans, car
ferries, or car-carrying catamarans?

The boats and catamarans traveling to Hydra carry only passengers, not cars, since Hydra is a car-free island.

As Paul mentioned, you can reach Hydra from Ermioni or Metochi which are relatively close to Nafplion but in October, there is only one boat per day, and you would have to leave your car behind before boarding.

From Piraeus, there are around 8 boats a day to Hydra in October.

In my opinion, the easiest approach is to drive round-trip between Athens and Nafplio, return the rental car, and then take a boat to Hydra.

Just be careful not to schedule your return from Hydra for the same day as your flight back via Rome.
