My husband and I will be in the Athens area for 1 week visiting relatives at the end of July. After that, my we have one more week in Greece, from August 1 to 9. We want to travel around the Peloponnese. We don't want to go at a breakneck pace. We like history but are more interested in charming, quiet towns, food, wine, and scenery. We will be there on our first anniversary so are interested in romantic places. I'd love advice on our thoughts so far.
Day 1: Drive from Athens to Nafplio, stopping at Cornith along the way. We are renting a car at the Athens airport.
Day 2: Explore Nafplio (sleep in Nafplio)
Day 3: Day tour to Mycenae and/or Epidavros (sleep in Nafplio)
Day 4: Drive to Kardamyli, explore along the way (sleep in Kardamyli)
Day 5: Kardamyli (sleep in Kardamyli)
Day 6: Drive to Diros Caves, see caves, drive to Monemvasia (sleep in Monemvasia)
Day 7: Monemvasia (sleep in Monemvasia)
Day 8: Drive to Nafplio, stopping in Sparta/Mystras along the way. (Sleep in Nafplio) -- or somewhere else??
Day 9: Drive from Nafplio to Athens and catch flight home in the evening
Some questions:
Is there anywhere else we should go? I am open to skipping Kardamyli. Do we have too much time in Kardamyli? Should we do 1 night there and have more time in Monemvasia? Or a full day in Mystras and spend the night there?
Any thoughts on recommendations for the end of our trip? Is there another good midway point between Monemvasia and Athens to spend the night without having too much driving on any one day?
I'd love to fit in a ferry ride at some point but it doesn't look like you can take a car on the ferry from Ermioni or Port Heli to Pireaus. Any other ideas on getting back to Athens via ferry? Dropping the rental car off in Nafplio adds hundreds to our trip and so wouldn't be worth it.
Thank you for your thoughts!
