Hi - has anyone had success with one-way car rentals? I would like to rent a car from Preveza (PVK) airport, use it for travel on Lefkada, and then up to Meteora and Delphi before returning it to Athens. It seems like the one-way rentals add at least $6-700 to the total cost. I'm curious if others have had luck with one-way car rentals in Greece? Thanks!
I haven't rented in Greece. When I've had difficulty in other countries with one-way rentals, I've contacted Autoeurope using their 800 number.
A one-way car rental will usually cost you an arm and a leg in Greece, since most of the time (for the local rental companies that actually allow it), they have to return the car to its original branch.
You might have a bit more luck with major international companies like Avis, Hertz, etc., but you should still expect a hefty surcharge anyway.
I found this to be true a couple of years ago, although I did find a place that allowed it. But the price increase was significant, so I worked my travel plan around to allow for a return to the same place, using busses to supplement.
One-way mainly occurs in countries where there are big national companies that have large fleets of cars in widely separated major hubs, with people from each place wantiing cars, so there's a constant back/forth. As noted, most rental agencies in Greece are smaller, with one base. To retrieve a car from a distant city would require sending a second car with TWO drivers there & back.
For Sicily, I went thru the cities that I was interested in and took note of the major car rentals in each one. I ended up going from Siracusa to Trapani, and each city had an Avis office, and I worked out the rental from that. Have you looked at common rental companies from PVK and Athens?
Thanks all. Both airports have the major car rental companies (Avis, Enterprise, National, Sixt, etc.), but they all have a hefty premium for one way travel as best as I can tell. I may just suck it up since it enables much more freedom for us to get to a few locations. If there aren't local companies who happen to offer this, then it is what it is....
