Any recommendations about where to stay for this one night stopover between flying in from Amsterdam and flying out to Crete (early September)? Is it worth the expense to travel into Athens late afternoon and back to airport in the morning or better to stay in suburbs near airport? Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated.

If it were me I would definitely head into Athens. There's a left luggage at the airport so no need to take everything with you. The metro will get you to Monastiraki in 40 minutes and what you spend on the ticket you will save on the hotel.
I'd stay at the Attalos and enjoy a meal out under the Acropolis!

Thanks so much for your responses. The Attalos looked good but is already booked for the night we'll be there...so we have now decided to book a flight to Crete the same day we arrive in Athens.
