I would appreciate hearing from anyone who had an overall great experience at their hotel stay in Athens. I'm taking my family on a cruise out of Athens, and only have time to come in 1 day prior. There will be 4 of us and looking for a safe, comfortable room in a desirable location and reasonable rates. I have been given some great suggestions when I inquired about hotels in the past and look forward to more helpful ideas. Thanks for sharing.

Hotel acropolis select is a gd bet with nice buffet breakfast and central and safe.
On our trip last year, we arrived in Athens in the evening, and were heading out of the city’s Piraeus Harbor the next day. We stayed at Peri’s Hotel, who provided a menu so they could order us food from a restaurant in the area, which was delivered to our room for dinner. The owner gave us a ride to the harbor the next morning. There were just 2 of us, which might be different enough that it wouldn’t compare with your plans and needs. They were a great choice for that one-night stand.
After we’d toured the Peloponnese for 2 weeks, we returned to Athens for 3 nights, and stayed just south of the Acropolis, at the Art Gallery Hotel, a better choice for a few nights more in the center of things.
I stayed at both the Hera and Acropolis Select 2 years ago. Both are used by the RS tours and both are nice. If you're taking a taxi or shuttle to/from the airport that's fine. If you are relying on public transport (metro or bus - they are about equal in time, the bus is cheaper), a hotel near Syntagma Square will be much easier to access. There are recommendations in the RS Greece guide book. The Hera and Acropolis Select are near the Acropolis, other sights are much closer to Syntagma.
I liked the Hera better than Select and it's closer to the Acropolis (they are on the same street, 1-2 blocks apart. For a really good dinner, go to Mani Mani on the same street between the two.
Now that I read your post more carefully . . . are you looking for a room for 4 people or 2 rooms? When I checked both those hotels, there was availability for 2 adults and 1 child (5-10 years). As soon as I put in a second child (even 0-4 years), no rooms at all.
When is your trip? Last week I booked a room in Athens for mid-October and there were rather slim pickings, both Hera and Select were fully booked for my dates.
Hi Js, Cyn, and Chani, thanks for the hotel suggestions. My wife and I will google them all. And the taxi information, and restaurant suggestion is much appreciated. My wife and I were here a few years ago, but our kids have't been, and want to make the most out of the 1 day we have there.
we stayed at hotel Achilleas in the Plaka district. it is an older hotel but very clean and includes really good breakfast. the hotel staff are amazing and helpful. on our last day before we left for the port they set up breakfast just for us since we were leaving before the stated breakfast hours. they were really nice. it's walking distance to EVERYTHING, it is a 15 minute walk to the Acropolis/Parthenon and all the shops and restaurants. we stayed here with our 7 and 5 year old girls and they loved it and walked everywhere. if you are leaving from Pireaus port you will be about 20 minutes away depending on traffic.
