One day in Athens

We have one day in Athens on our cruise next April. We saw the Acropolis, Acropolis museum, Ancient Agora, agora museum, plaka and archaeological museum this year. We like art, museums, history, archaeological sites and old city centers. What should we see within 1 1/2 hours from the cruise port?

We just returned from Greece. One day we hired a local to take us on a day trip to Marathon. He accommodated our schedule and interests. PM me for the name if interested. We also had time one morning to walk through Keramikos. We found it interesting. I'm glad there was cloud cover that day because most of the site does not have shade.

I recommend visiting Athens Central Market. There is a very interesting fish market and an interesting meat market. There are also restaurants in the Central Market where you can have lunch.

We also enjoyed walking around the Athens Flea Market. You can find anything you want there! Very interesting. And it's shady, and it wasn't crowded when we were there in May. So a good respite from the heat and crowds.

In Athens, the Cycladic Museum is very special, unique. There is also nearby, the Benaki Museum. Or go up to the top of Lycabettus Hill, part of the way is by tram, views of Athens to the sea.

Coming down from Mount Lycabettus (if you go there) you can then walk the streets of the Exarchia district which is totally different from the districts frequented by tourists (and without any security problem) and admire all the works of Street art that the locals painted on the walls.

If you like modern art, the National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST) is worth a visit, it is located about 350 meters south of the Acropolis Museum.

And with some time left before returning to the Piraeus cruise terminal, you can go to the Archaeological Museum of Piraeus. It is about 500 meters from the cruise terminals.

The museum is located right next to the marina of Piraeus which can also be a pleasant place for a walk (much quieter than the ferry port) and a destination for a last drink.

Near the port there is also the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center which is a beautiful modern building (and a very impressive library) surrounded by a park with water jets.
