Olympia --> Monemvasia --> Nafplio question

Later this month as part of our 10 days in Greece, we are planning on spending 2 nights in Olympia, and then I need some help on how to sequence things after that. We fly out of athens early on Sunday, November 27th.

This is set in stone: In central Greece and then November 20 and 21, we will Overnight in Olympia.

Then, should we:
A. Drive and do one night in Monemvasia (Nov 22), and then two nights in Nafplio (Nov 23 and 24), and then two nights in Athens (Nov 25 and 25)?

B. Or should we skip Monemvasia, and if so, are we better off with three nights in Nafplio or three nights in Athens? Or I'd love to find another town between Olympia and Nafplio to stay for one night. Or is there a close island we should go to between Nafplio and Athens?

We don't mind driving quite a bit to see things that are worth it. My husband loves history. I love beautiful scenes, and we don't drink, in case that's helpful.

Thanks!
Jane

I would suggest reduce to one night in Olympia and add a night in Nafplio or Athens. There really isn't anything in Olympia after the historic site which can be easily seen in one day. The drive from Olympia to Monemvasia is pretty long.

I agree with Joe. Olympia is not a town to stay in more than one night if at all possible. The historic site and museum can be seen in a few hours, so if you arrive mid-day, you can see it in the afternoon and leave the next day. If you arrive later in the day, you can stay overnight and see the site in the morning and then leave.

It is a long drive to Monemvasia but you could do it in a long afternoon drive. Then stay a couple of nights there. Or one of the towns along the western coast, which would be a shorter drive. Sparta is not a town that is all that interesting to stay, but nearby Mystras is a great visit and you could just stay in Sparta for a good night's sleep. It would be much closer than Monemvasia.

Nafplio is worth 3 nights, especially if you arrive later in the day. The town itself is great and there are several nearby sights that can be seen. But if the timing is favorable, you can easily see everything with just 2 nights. A site like Epidavros can be a short stop on your way back to Athens.

Athens is tough to see in just 2 nights, again, especially if you arrive later in the day. And it is a more pleasant city in November than the heat of summer.

Bottom line, you'll find you have far more to see and do than you have time for. So try and plan as efficiently as you can, especially given shorter daylight and museum hours.

Hi Jane -- just returned form 2 weeks in Greece and would agree with other posters who recommended just one night in Olympia. I thought Monemvasia was well worth the visit. It's unique and beautiful and was quiet when we were there last week. I also found Nafplio a bit sleepy at this time of year. Though I'm glad I went, there wasn't a whole lot to see. I'd recommend more time in Athens over Nafplio. I spent 5 nights total in Athens (1 full day was taken up with the marathon) and it's the place I wish I had spent more time. We saw all the highlights listed in the book, but didn't have time to add some of the things we would have liked to add such as the Jewish Museum. -- Rachel

I traveled to Greece last April but didn't visit Olympia; however, a friend recently visited and said it's worth only a day at most.
