Cruise starting in Athens, going to Santorini, Olympia and Corfu. Has anyone done this cruise or been to these places and can recommend excursions? End of May.
advise going on a website/forum where people report on cruises they took.... i think cruise critic is one. Very few people on this forum take those 4-day cruises....
hey hey awydra
where does you cruise end at? several years ago we did a greek island cruise from venice which no longer is available from venice.
i did a lot of research which you should do with what interest you, how many people are traveling, check cruisemapper.com with ship and date to see how many ships are in port and the thousands of people wanting to do the same as you.
not many here are cruise people, so we did free registration with cruisecritic.com
find roll call, ship, date and cruisers ask questions or post things they may want to share tours. that's what we did and meet people on ship. we wanted small tours 4-6 people with private taxi tours to share costs. it was great and fabulous. i did the research which takes time but pays off in the end. no athens or olympia.
we did crete & corfu (private taxi tour) mykonos just roamed around town, waterfront/windmills, where people live, lunch at cafe on water near port (loved mykonos and it's beauty), tour on crete was nice, santorini on our own. there is cable car up or donkey ride or walk up steps with donkey poo. it was so packed and crowded, long lines., 6 cruise ships in port with tousands wanting to see same as everyone else then trying to get down to ships that is a tendered port. once was enough, would not go again, my own opinion. we took aleft while others went right, walked through neighborhoods, saw churches, wave to residents, had late lunch at family owned restaurant with few people over caldera views then get to cablecar with hundreds waiting for same thing to get on ship. you decide what's important to you, many say ship excursions are expensive (pros & cons) ship will wait for you to get back, on your own they will wave to you as ship sails away. saw people that missed ship boarding and weren't happy.
arrive a few days in athens if that is your sailaway port, especially if flying from USA/Canada other faraway places. jetlag is real??? spend a few days in athens, seeing attractions, walking in markets, food tours. get tickets ahead of time direct thru websites
you are traveling durin high summer season HOT HOT, book hotels ahead of time not last minute. prices have skyrocketed big time for pat year or so plus so many people are traveling nowdays.
you can look at greectravel.com thats has lots of info on greece. few posters here are great with lots of info on the islands you plan to see. you may get good bad and ugly
it's your decison, have a great time and enjoy
aloha
For Santorini I did an NCL excursion that went to Oia. I did that one because instead of arriving at 9:00 AM as originally scheduled arrival was changed to 1:00 PM. If you take a cruiseline excursion, you go to a different landing where you take a bus. Otherwise you go to the main port where most people take the cable car. The cable car capacity is only 36 per trip so the wait can be very long. An alternative to the cable car is a boat to below Oia and then an uphill walk to a bus. This route is not offered in reverse.
So unless you want to walk down from Fira, the alternative is the cable car. I would allow 2 hours if thete are many ships in port.
