New Year's Greek Island Vacation.

We are a family group of 7 adults looking to spend the last week of December on a Greek island with beautiful ocean and sunset views. We would like a town with enough resturants and pubs a well stocked grocery market to keep us self contained and happy. Convenient access to and from the Athens airport is important. Any suggestions?

Lots of the islands have airports: Santorini, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Crete, Rhodes, Milos, Skiathos, Samos, Kos and Lesvos are just a few.

I hope you realize that island weather will most likely be cold and wet then.

Martin, I fear that you are like so many Americans who equate the Mediterranean with the Caribbean. The Med/Aegean is in fact about the same latitude as VIrginia ... and in Winter, a lot rainier. Check out a globe; Mykonos is Not Barbados. Now, Barbados ... there's a cheery December thought!

I will take your advice. Further research is needed. We will find someplace with more predictable, pleasant weather for our New Year's week vacation. Thanks

While Athens, the Islands and Southern Greece are not the "tropics" they certainly are not the North Pole. Average temps for that part of the country is 56F with with a chance of rain about 11 days. Not perfect but far from being miserable. It's a great time to save lots of money on flights, accommodations, shopping & tavernas. One very good thing is there will be not many tourists. So if you are willing to wear a light jacket & have an umbrella handy you will find that you can have a great time in Greece! If you are looking for full sunshine, temps in the 80s and lazing around on a beach then go somewhere else, but if you want a lot of bang for your buck and see Greece as the locals do then go for it!

Just keep in mind that, although fairly rare, at that time of year there can be snow on some of the islands.
