My husband and I will be on Naxos for five nights starting May 19. We were wondering what are some activities to do that you suggest. We will not have a car, we are staying in town. Is there a tour company for day trips available? I understand there are archaeological sites to see. Please give us some tips including restaurants.
Thanks for your help!

I don't know about guided tours, but we spent 5 nights on Naxos 4 years ago, right after the RS Greece tour. It was phenomenal! Mostly, we relaxed on the beach, ate, drank, etc. We really needed to relax after the go-go-go pace of the tour. The town is entirely walkable, and it seemed every restaurant was good.
A public bus runs from just off the ferry terminal in old town. It’s a 2€ fare, and will take you out to many of the best beaches.
For restaurants, I wholeheartedly recommend checking the following:
Doukato, Apostolis, and Flamingo for supper, and Boulamatsis for lunch/casual supper.
All are within the old town walking area, just a bit challenging to find, since it’s like wandering around a charming maze!
There is a round the island bus tour on Naxos. It goes twice a week and covers most of the interesting spots on the island. Its a great way to take it all in in a day. While we have not taken the tour when we explored the island we had a car however we ended up at the same location as the bus tour three times and I can attest that the guide really knows his subject matter.
Here is what we saw on our tour of Naxos.

I echo the use of public transportation on Naxos. We used it to visit the beaches and the lovely ancient village of Apeiranthos. The bus drops you off and returns about 2.5 hours later. Gives you enough time to have lunch with a view and walk the village. It was one of the top highlights of our week in Naxos. This website features the village: www.naxos.net
Our favorite restaurant in Naxos Town is Nostimon Hellas. We ate there several times. Unique Greek cuisine. They have a lovely courtyard in the back. Have a wonderful stay!
Following up on kickin's post- We took the bus he mentions from the old town to Agios Georgios beach and just grabbed chairs under an umbrella in front of a taverna. The chair/umbrella is free, with the understanding that you'll buy stuff from the restaurant. Take a book and some sunscreen and you can spend the day in comfort with food and wine brought right to your chair for as long as you want to be there.
Also, in the old town, stop by the Venetian museum at the castle and you can get info and tickets for various shows they offer. http://naxosfestival.com/events We attended an outdoor Sunset concert with Greek dancing and music that includes free wine and raki that was really fun.
Brett's advice is good with one correction -- the busline runs all along the shore stopping at Ag. Prokopios Beach (about 2 stops), Ag. Anna, and Plaka beach (at least 3 stops). I believe he must have stopped at one of those ... and it certainly is the case that sunloungers that belong to cafes can be used free, when you buy a beverage or snack. Ag. Giorgios beach is adjacent to the far end of the port town, around the harbor curve, and over a slight hill... a 15 minute walk from the ferry, and no road along the beach, so does not have or need a bus to reach it. It's quite shallow (you wade out about 150 yards & its up to your waist), but that's actually good in mid-May when the water can be VERY Brisk at Ag. Prokopios (it drops off to deepness about 10 feet from waters edge) .. while Ag. Giorgios is able to warm up a bit faster.
We were just there and used Nikolas, the owner of Naxos Discovery Tours. He drove us around for 6 hours, stopping at archaeological sites, the towns of Halki and Apiranthos, and the coolest part - a private family chapel from the 13th century. He was a good driver, a good local host and gave us tons of information. https://www.naxosdiscovery.net
Valerie, recommendations like this are always so helpful, when they include some idea of cost... so people can decide if it's in their budget.
160 euros was the total cost for our party of 2 for 6 hours.
That sounds wonderful Valerie... but for people on more stringent budgets, the tours described by Stanbr are about €23 per person and perhaps more affordable -- now original poster has several good options.
We will be in Naxos in September. We are planning to rent a car or ATV. I have read that its a great way to see the Island. Any opinions with regard to this option?
Car is helpful. We had one for 2.5 days. I would not rent an atv. There are some gravel roads and they are not as steady.
We took the bus tour around the island in 2017. It was very interesting and took us to a good variety of places. This year we know the towns we want to revisit and will use the public buses.
