Naxos and Antiparos trip 2026

2 days before our departure my wife went through her knee. Well, she has a good one and a bad one. Unfortunately she went through her good one stepping of a bike. The 1st thing we were thinking was to cancel the whole trip. But after a visit to the doctor she was given a green light. You better sit on a chair in the sun on a Greek island than you sit on a chair at home he said. And he injected some gel in her knee cap because "arthritis" was his diagnosis. But there was other good news too: our vouchers for a free upgrade to business class were accepted by Aegean.
So we made it to Naxos after a day's travel. As usual, Michaella from Antonia Studios, was awaiting us at the small airport in Naxos. it has been our place to stay for the last 4-5 years now. But unfortunately our usual studio is not available (for the moment?) due to renovation.
The Olympic flight from Athens to Naxos was only 1/3 occupied. Never experienced so few passengers on that flight. And a funny question from the stewardess: "Anyone wants to sit at the back to exit first?" When I declined saying I know what happens if you are first at the luggage belt in Naxos, she laughed. For those who don't know: it's a very short one and if your luggage isn't first to arrive you're stuck with passing on everybody else's luggage.

Even Greek Orthodox Easter has passed, there are still a lot of places closed that are usually open. But that is for the next post. To be continued.

Can't wait to hear, as things move along ... have been to Naxos & Ag. Giorgios with a bum knee, so I can relate!

Sitting in the sun on Naxos to recuperate will definitely do the trick, look after her Nicksy she’s a trooper!

Have a great time. I too have a bum Knee but it stops hurting in Naxos.

I just had a look, the luggage belt is even smaller than the one on Paros and Milos, incredible...

Have a great time! Always enjoyed your trip reports in recent years, as it is so similar to my way of travelling. Hope some others get some inspiration too by reading it :-)

I looked it up for the last few years and we have never arrived so early in Naxos. On the seafront probably 30% of shops and restaurants/cafes is not open yet. St. Georges beach is empty except for some sun loungers at Ippocampos and at Nissaki Beach.
Usually our 1st night we go to Oasis for diner but it's still closed. Understandably so because the road was closed the last couple of days from the bakery and Hotel Sphinx onward. There are some extensive works. We found a good alternative though in To Elliniko.
And it's unbelievable to see how many building and renovation work there is done for the moment. I don't think there is 1 street in St. Georges where they are not building or renovating.
On Sunday we had a great chat with a young couple from Toronto whilst having lunch at Tavern (with the fake bougainville), for us still one of the best places for food in Naxos Town.
The first 2 days there was this cold wind from the North that made it even chilly when sitting on our balcony but the last few days the wind direction changed and it's even nice to sit in the shadow.
Due to the physical problems there no long beach walks this time. But with some short talks into town, some board games and a few books we still have a good time.

Just a short update. Got our tickets to Paros and back (BS Naxos & BS1) for Tuesday and next Monday. We have been spoiled by Michaella (as usual) with cake, cheese pie, spinach pie, mushroom pie, bougatsa, … And in between she even found time to go to Koufounisi for the panagiri of Ag. Georgios where they kept on dancing till early morning. We now know it will be mid May next year so …. Unless I stick to my plan for next year to come to Naxos for 10-12 days and then fly via Athens to the Sporades, where we have never been before.
Another lovely lunch at Taverna today with a Greek variety of “fish and chips”. Cod in batter fried and served with chips, mashed potatoes with (lots of) garlic and a salad. After 2 days with heavy clouds ( and rain yesterday) it was nice sunshine today with nearly no wind. But nothing has changed on the beach yet. Except for the sunbeds at Ippokampos and at Nissaki Beach, nothing is open yet. Same goes for restaurants in Ag. Georgios: Oasis, Meltemi and Me Nou are still closed. Spoke yesterday to the owner of Kali Kardia on the seafront and he said they might be open next weekend but not sure yet. It depends how the renovation goes. It’s a bit the same everywhere here: renovations and finding the right people to do it at the right time. Looks like people in construction are earning a lot these days.

Spoiled indeed Nicksy!

Same in the UK, good tradesmen are in high demand and earning plenty!

The Sporades in May will be wonderful before the hordes arrive. My parents enjoyed Skopelos and I’ve a yearning to see Alonnisos but didn’t care for Skiathos at all the first week in July. It must be lovely to see the beaches before the sunbeds arrive, they were packed tight on Koukounaries. Nice walk through the pine forests to the north coast.

Enjoy the next stage of your trip.

I’m off to Lesvos on 6th May and looking forward to being back in Greece.

Thanks for the reporting. I haven’t been to Naxos yet, but it should probably appear on a trip itinerary some time in the future. Lol.

We had only been to Antiparos twice for 1/2 day in the past and both times we had said it might be nice to stay for a few days. And now we are here for 3 days already with 3 to go. It really meets our expectations so far. It’s quiet so early in the year, something we like very much. The locals are very friendly even if they are very busy preparing for the season that for a lot of businesses starts tomorrow on May Day. A lot of Greek families arrived today for a weekend break it seems. Everywhere you go in town you get the smell of fresh paint.
The last few years you hear and read sometimes that travelling between the islands has become more expensive. This is a breakdown of what we paid to get from Naxos to Antiparos.
Blue Star ferry from Naxos to Paros: 15,50€
Bus from Parikia port to Pounta: 2€
Ferry from Pounta to Antiparos: 1,50€
Grant total: 19€ per person

Nicksy, is SaleRosso still there? We had several lovely meals there during our visit to Antiparos in early May years ago. It was very quiet that early in the season so we would linger and chat with them ... they gave us limoncello at the end of our meal and even shared their recipe. We make it at Christmas for our friends and think fondly of Antiparos.

We stayed at Mike's Place, with the sweet ladies. And took a wonderful boat trip one day with Captain Ben ... again, early in the season, so only 4 other people and a lovely quiet day. I'm almost talking myself into returning to Antiparos!

The first time I went to Paros, the 2nd week in May, everyone was painting, painting... and not just the buildings & the boats... I wandered out on the pathway toward the western bay, the sunset bay. the home owners on the pathway were painting the groutt lines between the flagstones ... I stopped to talk with each one, practicing some of my Greek expressions, and they kndly indulged me.

Charlene, yes SaleRosso is still here but not open yet. Btw, I’m staying next to Mike’s Place at Nicolas Studio’s.
And it’s absolutely not May Day weather today: 14C and 6Bf wind from the N. In 1 word: COLD.

A typo in my previous post -- I meant to say ANTIPAROS.... have been to Paros at least 5 x .... but Antiparos has my heart now.

May Day today with cold and windy weather. Not what you expect in Greece! And the forecast is the same for the whole weekend. But plenty Greeks have come to Antiparos for a long weekend. We were even the only non-Greeks today at Stathero where we had lunch today. About lunch: it was Grilled sausage (served with fries), plate of Horta, Bamies (Okra) in tomatosauce and (5) Zuchini balls with bread and 1/2L of house wine. 32€ for 2 persons after 10% discount because we paid cash! Not the 1st time we have the experience of getting a discount in a restaurant because we pay cash.
We went 2 times to Pantelis Fish taverna because it’s close near our accommodation but had already our doubts after the 1st visit. Everybody needs a 2nd chance we said but that one wasn’t taken either by Pantelis. We found price/quality not good.
Got a message from Michaella from Antonia Studios that 1) the renovation of our favourite studio is finished and it’s ready for us next Monday, and 2) she will be waiting for us at the port. She is such a 💎

Back in Naxos for a couple of days now and 1 more week to go. Due to the limited mobility of Mrs Nicksy, there are no beach walks to the Laguna or even further to Ag. Prokopios. It was crazy to see how the weather changed on Monday when we came back from Antiparos. In Paros we were looking for a sheltered place to sit for an hour waiting for the ferry. But we found it at Limani cafe ( right in front of the port). Once on board the Blue Star 1 , we had a few drops of rain sitting at the open deck. And once we reached the northern tip of Paros there was a bright sunshine and blue sky while there still stick dark clouds over Paros.
A BIG shout out for the Blue Star 1 crew for the personal assistance Mrs Nicksy got when boarding the ferry and again on arrival in Naxos 👍👍👍

And it’s back to “normal” routine now without the usual beach walks. Lunch at Taverna or To Elleniko with Oasis opening tonight becoming the 3rd option.

Can Mrs. Nicksy handle the walk to Boulamatsis? It’s always one of our favorite stops for reliably good, simple food and the great views over the harbor.

Wow Nicksy, I'm glad Mrs Nicksy was able to travel and hope she is in less pain now and recovering well. Sounds like a very different experience in Naxos etc. in terms of weather and open businesses from recent years in late April. Glad to hear your weather is improving - it seems to have been a very cold start to the season in most of Greece but hopefully warmer and more settled weather is on its way. Enjoy your last few days.
I'm off to Skiathos on Sunday for a solo trip, with a short side trip to Alonnisos and am really looking forward to enjoying the beauty of these islands without the crowds! I've been twice before, in 1999 and 2012 so am expecting some changes!! Will report back!

Hi Nicksy glad to hear Mrs Nicksy got the VIP treatment on the ferry. They were wonderful with me last September on Dodekanisos catamarans.

Cloudy but warm here on Lesvos today, visiting Molyvos harbour for a long lunch. 5 weeks today I’ll be flying from UK to Samos.

Enjoy the rest of your trip!
