hello - considering a stay in Nafpliom for 3 or 4 nights - is there a hotel near both the beach and the town - are the beaches nice? day trips from there as our base? Any guidance greatly appreciated!
There are many, many hotels in the old town area of Nafplio, and more nearby if you have a car. Nafplio isn't known for beaches, but the Arvanitias beach is right there in town (on the south side).
We stayed at the Omorfi Poli Pension in the pedestrianized center of Nafplio, and we loved our stay here. We had the delicious included breakfast every morning on their patio. We had a large room; the owners and staff are wonderful. Parking is nearby at a huge community parking lot.
We took several daytrips from Nafplio: Ancient Epidaurus, Mycenae, and Mystras. The drive to Mystras was about 1.5 hours, but it is well worth it. Mystras is my favorite of all the ruins we visited. We also drove down the Argolid Peninsula to swim at the beach at Porto Heli, and then to have dinner at the fishing village of Ermioni.
We did a self-guided walking tour of beautiful Nafplio, explored the Palamidi Fortress, and spent a lazy afternoon at Arvanita Beach. Oh, and we saw the most amazing sunset at Nafplio, better even than Santorini!
There are other archaeological ruins nearby that we didn't visit simply because we wanted to do other things. We spent 5 nights in Nafplio, and we were never bored.
