My cruise will be making a stop in Nafplio on March 5, 2025 (7 am to 5 pm). I am traveling solo and this is my first trip to Greece. For most ports of call, I've made arrangements for tours. My primary interests for Nafplio are safely strolling around, shopping, eating, and photo opportunities (I'm a photographer) near the port. From what I read, Old Town Nafplio is small and safe. It doesn't seem that I need to arrange for a guided tour. My question is about getting to the old town area from the port...is that an easy walk? Also what are some fun places to walk to?

FIrst of all, i am wondering whether you should be traveling solo, given your obsession with "safe." You may be interested to know that Greece is considered one of the very safest countries in all Europe. I have lived in NYC, Chicago, Philadelphia, frequently travel solo and visited most of the capitals in Europe... and in none of these have I ever felt as safe as a retiree traveling solo in Greece. So please focus on other things.
As for Nafplio, i recommend some basic research -- since you are spending $$ on a cruise, how about a guidebook? Actually you can get one Free at your local Library.. I recommend "Rough GUide to Greece" for most info on Greece in General & good background on Nafplio. For the BEST online source, try the superb Noncommercial website - http://www.visitnafplio.com/ ... created by a longtime Scandinaviana expat who knows more about Nafplio than people born there & who's also a stunning photographer. I could write reams about what to do- see- eat... but she says/shows it best. Read EVERY link! ESpecially look at her walks - suggestions.. FOr photographers, pictures from the top of the mighty "rock" Palamidi is a MUST -- but one must either climb up 999 steps (No!) or get a ride up the back road. You might share a taxi ride up/back with other cruisers or there's a "Fun Train" https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g319780-d10759105-r470257836-Nafplio_City_Tour-Nafplio_Argolis_Region_Peloponnese.html -- (really a truck pulling open cars) ... it goes to major city site PLus up PAlamidi .. but according to TA reviews, off-season requires a number of customers to run the tour... so plan ahead if you want this.
As for the port, if you will simply look at a map, the Port IS at Old Town. Enjoy!

On rereading my entry, I realilze I sound like an old schoolteacher -- my apologies!! I reallize that on your first trip, and going alone, you may be very cautious ... and I just want you to relax & enjoy the most beautiful Old Town in All of Greece. In fact, it has been called "the proposal capital" because it's so romantic that many Greek men take their sweetheart there for the Big Ask. ALso I was scoldy, forgive me and pllease just read up.. because Nafplio has such wonderful history, it will enrich your visit... and make you decide to come back for a stay. It's amazing... I went there on the last 2 days of my first tripi... and since then have returned many many m any times.

We were in Nafplio this summer. We found a taxi rank and asked for a transfer to the fortress. He had a deal to drive us up and wait for us to drive us back down into the city. I do not remember how much it cost I am guessing about 50 euros. It was worth it.
