Multiple Athens Questions

We will be taking the RS Tour to Greece in September We will arrive several days early and can stay a few extra days. Advice please on these questions.

We are looking to stay 4 days prior and 2 days after the trip in hopes of making our own excursions to Mykanos and one to Santorini.

We are looking for a clean, safe hotel with a little atmosphere that need not be "higher class" as we are rarely there! We can move on meetup day. Suggestions please.

Has anyone done a 2 night overnight to Santorini by plane.....if so airlines and advice. Ditto for reasonable place to stay on the island. If we stay out of "town" is finding a taxi to get back to the airport easy.

Input: IF at the end of the trip we go to Santorini and return to reservations at a not so fancy hotel you can suggest, do you think it is possible the return hotel will let us leave our big luggage for two nights in their luggage room for our return? Thinking the airplane may have small luggage requirements.

We thought we would take the day tour to Mykanos by catamaran.

What "things" did you enjoy in Athens that were not on the RS tour that we may do before the tour starts. Eating out at fancy places not for us but just about anything else is! Thank you. Kathy and Bill

I did the RS Greece tour in ‘22 and just loved it. We arrived the day before the tour started and then went to Mykonos and Santorini for 4 nights each after the tour. Three things I wish I had time for while in Athens are taking a daytrip to Meteora, doing a walking food tour in Athens and going to the Olympic stadium so I definitely suggest you look into doing those. One thing I really enjoyed was watching the changing of the guards so please take the time to see that. None of these activities are part of the Greece tour.

We flew to Mykonos via Aegean Air and the flight was very smooth and on time. Flying to Santorini is a good idea because the ferry from Athens will just take too long. With two nights in Santorini, I’m not sure you can fit in a daytrip to Mykonos. I would suggest just staying Santorini, it’s much prettier. Make time to do the Fira to Oia hike. That was our plan but we were honestly exhausted from the tour that we just couldn’t do it. The Greece tour is a very active tour so of you’re not typically active, start walking now. Lots of stairs and hills on the tour and in Santorini. We did a walking food tour and saw the Big Fat Greek Wedding show in Santorini and totally enjoyed both. We also rented a car for the day and drove all over the island even stopping to see the archeological site of Akrotiri.

I would suggest do take a day from the beginning of the tour and add it to the end for Santorini. Best to contact your hotel to ask them your question about holding your luggage. If not, use the Stasher app to find luggage storage for a fee.
