Move my flight or risk it?

I chose a weird flight path from Amsterdam to Athens in order to get to Athens earlier. Here's the breakdown:

Amsterdam-->Kos (05:15 to 09:45, Transavia),

then a 1hr40min layover,

then Kos-->Athens (11:25 to 12:15, Aegean).

I booked the flights separately instead of going through a third-party company (I was gonna have to do self-transfer with them anyway). My travel date is June 30th, in the middle of peak season.

So now I'm having second thoughts because I'm scared I will miss my Aegean flight. If I do, the next Aegean flight is at 18:10 (8.5hr layover), but there is no guarantee that I'll have a seat since it is peak season. It'll take at most 30min to unboard from my Transavia flight, then since it is international, I'll prolly have to go through customs. Then since it wasn't booked through third-party, I'd have to print my Aegean boarding pass upon landing and transfer my check-in baggage myself.

My Transavia flight is non-refundable and is the more expensive flight, so I don't wanna cancel that. My Aegean flight can be changed until 1hr before departure, for a small fee, but again I'm not guaranteed a seat in the 18:10 flight.

I also already added Fast Track to my Aegean flight.

My question is: should I change my flight now to the 18:10 or just risk it?

Thanks.

Can’t figure out why you didn’t originally book a direct 3-hour flight from AMS to ATH. . Were it my trip, I’d just bite the bullet and pay $240 for just such a flight. It will end all the nail-biting suspense and stress.
Another alternative would be to visit Kos— it’s a great island with beautiful beaches and lots of interest in Kos Town.

I don't really care about the money nor the length or earliness of the flight. Most of the flights had arrivals of 4:30pm onwards. This is probably the only one that has an arrival this early on that day, which is why I chose it.

I don't think anyone can help you make a decision, given that it's impossible to predict whether your AMS→Kos flight will be delayed or not.

You alone are responsible for this decision, just as you chose this option to try to arrive earlier in Athens.

According to the statistics for your AMS→KOS flight (HV5041), of the last three flights, 2 were 20 minutes early, and 1 was delayed by 2 hours and 50 minutes.

If you don’t care about the financial aspect, for $289 on Trip.com there is a 12:15 pm Aegean Airlines flight from AMS Schipol to ATH arriving in 3:05 hours at 4:20pm
If you don’t have a wedding to attend in Athens- what difference does it make when you get there?

JoLui I think you're right. I think I'll just keep tracking this flight to see trends. It is a gamble, but June 30th is a Monday, so maybe not. I might decide to rebook if it is.

Kenko, that flight arrives too late for me, that's why I chose this flight.

Just remember when tracking flights.....it can come in 30 minutes early for 30 days and then on your travel day it arrives two hours late. There is no prediction.

So the original direct flight into Athens was arriving too late but now you're considering changing to a flight that arrives even later.

Good luck.

There is a KLM nonstop from AMS to ATH that departs at 8:35am and arrives at 12:50pm.

It's not cheap, but I assume there is some reason you didn't book that flight?

If you don't want to eat the cost of your original itinerary, then you're definitely in an
uneasy position, since you have two separate tickets and checked baggage.

Confirm what the deadline for checking in bags on Aegean is - that will determine your
actual window of time. If it's 45 minutes, for example, then you have an hour to get off
the 1st plane, claim bags, and then exit security and recheck. I assume Kos is a small
airport, so should not be that hard to navigate. Customs is a non-event so that should
not impact things at all.

You would be better off if you can convert to carry-on or gate-checked baggage.
If you can get it through security at Schiphol, then you can gate-check it and things
become a lot easier.

Keep in mind that if you miss your Aegean flight than Aegean has NO obligation to get you on the 18:10 flight unless you buy a new ticket. So if you are in the air on Transavia and realize you can't make it and can't get on wifi (no idea if they have it) then what?

Aegean baggage check closes 30 minutes before the flight. ( https://en.aegeanair.com/travel-info/travelling-with-aegean/check-in/airport-check-in/) So your 1 hour 40 minutes automatically is reduced to 1 hour 10 minutes. You basically have no wiggle room

(And probably using a 3rd party would not help. If it's a self transfer you are just out of luck with a lot of these agencies..)

I do a lot of non-protected connections and want 4 hours to avoid these risks

My husband and son had a layover like that in Athens. I met them there as I had flown in hours earlier.

You have to change terminals which is a quick walk up some stairs. But then you will have to check your bag and go through security.

I had already scoped out everything and met them when they came through the doors from their first flight, and took them to where they would have to check in their luggage.

They had carry on for first flight but Aegean planes are smaller. If you have checked luggage for first flight, you will have to pick up your luggage too.

We made the flight without any issues. They were boarding when we arrived.

This is to say it is possible but I saved them some time by knowing where everything was. It would be very very tight for you even if your plane is on time.

It'll take at most 30 minutes to unboard from my Transavia flight.

There are no unboarding bridges at Kos Airport; you will be transferred to the airport building by bus.

Since it's international, I'll immediately have to go through customs.

There will be no customs or passport checks at Kos Airport. Customs officers will deal with you only if you need to declare something.

I'll have to print my Aegean boarding pass upon landing.

Whichever Aegean flight you take, download the Aegean app, it allows you to download your boarding pass 48 hours before your flight.

Aegean's Kos-Athens flights are operated on Airbus A320s, so no worries about baggage size.

I've also already added Fast Track to my Aegean flight.

It can help to save a few minutes, Kos airport is not huge but very busy in summer, there are many flights with low cost airlines, notably TUI or Jet2 which offer holiday packages from the UK
