mosquitoes in Crete?

I just saw that many lodgings in Rethymon provide mosquito netting. Could one expect there to be mosquitoes in mid May? Is this all over Crete or only in certain locations? What time of year would these pesky little things be out and about?

Mosquitoes need fresh water to breed, so wherever you've got a good sea breeze and only salt water, you should be fine. Avoid nearby fresh water lakes, and hotels with a pool. ;-)

That said, I'd usually expect mosquitoes to be active later in the year. But what do I know, maybe the Crete mosquitoes think differently about this.

I do remember fierce insect bites, not sure if they were mozzies, in Crete in late September but it was evening and we were sitting ina restaurant next to a stream with lots of foliage just off a coastal road. The villas I have stayed in all had insect screens but I recall any an evening on the patio with a glass of wine or two. Don’t recall any beasties when I was there in April/May.

Ah! Thank you, Leslie. I am relieved to hear that. I was starting to freak out a little when I read about the mosquito netting. Our family tends to be mossie magnets and have spent several days in misery due to these little buggers on various vacations in various countries.

I was about to post those same reassurances. I'm one of those people that friends take on picnics, because I will attract ALL biting things, and as you've read, almost all of my Greece trips have started in Mid-may ... On my first trip I took along all sorts lotions, almost never needed any. Only skeeter nettting I've encountered was a quick overnight in Georgiopoulous in Crete -- doors & windows. But in the AM we noted there was a lazy stream right by our street. In no other places in Crete or other islands have i/we encountered or needed them. Of course I always stay as close to beach as possible... onshore breeze is lovely.

During your stay it may get warm enough that you'll want the A/C at night. If not, and you want open window, One tip: if going out from your room/apt to dinner around sunset, close the windows and shutters. When u get back, be all ready to turn in, THEN turn off light, open windows & shutters.
