Sanity check here. A friend said another friend returned from and had trouble with smaller stores not being able to give change for cash. I googled and can find no info. Asking those who are there for the real truth.
It's surprising, I haven't heard of this cash shortage, I don't have this information from people who are currently in Greece and the Greek press doesn't talk about it, not even the economic press.
On the other hand, there are reports about people who want to pay with a €50 banknote things that cost €2.20.
We were there in late May and had no issues in Athens or on Crete
We use a credit card anytime we can when traveling internationally. Very little local currency is used. Most tourist shops accept them.
No, it's not a thing.
Sounds like somebody tried to break a 50 or 100 euro bill for a small purchase and the vendor didn't want to.
I find this becoming even more common in many places. In Pompeii last year I tried to pay the 32Euro entry fee (2 people) with 40 Euros and was denied because there wasn't enough change.
Thanks all for your input.
