Milos or Sifnos in the Greek Islands

A couple of questions
Which island do you prefer?
I have been to Sifnos and loved it. We stayed in Kamares, but if we go there again I was thinking Platis Gialos or Faros. Do you have a preference? We have young kids and I love a shallow beach nearby

For Milos, which town is the best to stay in? I was thinking Pollonia but heard its windy
We will be going early July
THANKS!

On Sifnos, I would choose Platy Gialos ... the longest golden sandy beach, and safely shallow at water's edge.. Faros, used to be just a fisherman's village, its beach is small and, comparatively speaking, sand is darker, almost looks like a dirt-mix, never appealed to me. I think Platy Gialos offers more if you're staying on the scene most evenings, for dinner & socializing. In high season, busses are more frequent, so you don't have to rent a car unless you want to for one day, to sightsee. I myself, since I've visited in May-June, stay up in hill village, Apollonia or Ano Petali, because off-season there's more going on there, off an evening... and bus to the beach, but if I were still in the young-parent category, I'd stay right on the beach.

Also, agree about Kamares ... good to visit, or to have dinner, but not a fave stay-place for me, especially in high season. Constant traffic on the ONE main street, busy-busy ... plus, with all the boat traffic on the piers, the bottom gets stirred up, and the water is more muddy. At the other beaches, it's that lovely clear blue.

If you're thinking Milos... lots and lots of beaches, but even in high season the bus schedule is really lame, so you'd end up having to rent car for much of your stay; besides the expense, there's the hassle of making sure the rental has correct car seats. Pollonia is the only town I've stayed in besides the port, and then only in May & June, so not well-versed on wind. Do note that the wind comes from the N. W. in July-August, and that's where Pollonia is. For that reason, I think Sifnos best for you at this time. When your kids are older, say 8 & 10 or so, Milos can be fascinating... visiting all 22 beaches, and Especially, doing one of those boat trips round (or half-round) the island ... with kids that age, the catamaran (room for 12-14) is good boat-choice ... goes as far as Kleftiko - see map http://www.seakayakgreece.com/virtualtour.htm -- plenty of time for swims in coves, BBQ on sand, and a rubber-boat paddle thru volcanic waterside "caves." Save this treat for later years.
