Meteora Monasteries

Does it make sense to take a day trip while in Athens to Meteora with the understanding that this is strictly for the views from the bus since the many steps to go inside the Monasteries would not be possible? We do understand this is a long day.

I think it would not only be a long day, but too long, at least an overnight would make a world of difference.

As for the monasteries, one, the Monastery of St Stephen is easy to access and is a very good choice. You can drive (or take a bus) right up to it, the parking lot is level with the entrance, just a short bridge getting you inside. There are some steps inside, but not too many.

If you really want to see Meteora, do it! Seeing Meteora was more amazing for us than seeing the Acropolis. This summer we took a day trip from Paris to Normandy. I have read many replies to questions about this day trip (Paris to Normandy) that say that it is too long of a trip for one day and that you don't get to see enough. Almost everyone says you have to spend at least one night. We only had one available day to see Normandy, so we took the train and did a day trip. I am SO glad we did! Yes, it was a long day, but it was totally worth it to us. Sometimes you just need to listen to you and not everyone else. You do what you want to do. Have a great trip!

I think an overnight would make much more sense because of how long it will take to get there and get back. The small town of Kastraki at the base has some really good views up. And you could do a driving tour in a loop around the monasteries - there are some stopping places that will afford gorgeous views across and down. As Paul said, the Monastery of St. Stephan is pretty easy access (nothing like the steps the others have). I absolutely love this area, but I am not sure I would tell anyone to do it as a day trip.

The earlier comparison to Paris-Normandy is a bit ridiculous. Paris to Caen is 2 hours by train. Athens to Meteora is 4 hours by car - far too far to be an enjoyable day trip (for me, anyway). I would definitely stay overnight, preferably in Kastraki, recommended to be in Doupiani House (https://www.doupianihouse.gr/).

That said, if you still want to do it, Visit Meteora does offer a 14-hour EUR 755 day trip (https://visitmeteora.travel/tour/full-day-private-tour-to-meteora-from-athens/).
