Hello. My wife and I are planning on visiting Meteora in mid-September. The photos of the location are wonderful, but we are curious if anyone has a recommended way to enjoy the area. Are there sites we should check out or recommended hikes? We will have a vehicle if needed.
I would recommend checking online for the dates and times that the monasteries are open. Some of the monasteries are closed on certain days. Also be sure that your wife’s knees are covered when visiting the monasteries.
Awesome advice. Will do! Thanks!
My daughter and I were there May 2017. What an amazing place. To make best use of the very limited time we had (a day), we took a half day tour, this gave us a good overview and our guide was able to suggest a couple short hikes (sorry not to remember more specifics).
It has been a while, so if some of this is out of date, sorry. The monasteries are fairly well spaced out, so you need some plan to get around. There are a few that are accessible from a single road. As I recall I took the bus up to the Great Meteor Monastery, then if you are fit, you can walk back down and hit as many as three others depending on which are open that day, and into the small town at the base of the road, catching a bus back to Kalambaka. There are two other active Monasteries, if you have interest in them, then a car would be best, plus you can take some of the other roads to observation areas. Parking I thought looked limited, except at Great Meteor. Of course, arranging a personal or group tour is also a tactic, especially if you are not up to extensive walking.
We really enjoy hiking so your ideas are excellent. Time for my wife and I to build out our plan! Thank you!
