My husband and I are driving a rental car to Kastraki from Delphi and staying two nights. Looking for recommendations for a local tour guide
We took two different tours with Visit Meteora and were very pleased.
A second vote for Visit Meteora https://visitmeteora.travel
we also took two tours with them. The day tour and the sunset tour. The two tours did not repeat sites and were different. They used a van, so it was a small group.
We also drove from Athens to the area. Stayed at a hotel in Kalabaka. The tour van picked us both times from the hotel and brought us back.
We were pleased with the tour. Having someone else drive the windy roads let me (usually the driver) enjoy my visit more.
The only thing I can complain about is that they didn't tell us that the women had to wear skirts to enter certain monasteries. My wife had to buy one of monastery's wrap arounds at the gift shop. It was cheap though.
The sunset tour was wonderful!
Definitely Visit Meteora.
Do make sure you have a skirt and have knees and shoulders covered. We did a hiking tour and I had a wrap around skirt and a very thin sweater in my back pack which I put over my shorts and tank top.
My husband wore pants although I saw some men with what I would call capris but I am sure are referred to differently by men. I think they were German.
We were there about 10 yrs ago and I recall some monasteries having “loaner skirts” that you could wrap around yourself if needed. But they were pretty grody, so best to carry your own. Also, since you’ll have a car you can easily drive to all of them and visit on your own. Good luck!
We are driving to Kalabaka from Athens and stop by Archive and Delphi on our way in July. Any other town we should stop by on our way back to Athens.
Do the tolls accept credit card?
Thank you!
Do the tolls accept credit card?
Yes. We paid all our tolls with a credit card at toll booths with attendants. Just be sure to get into the correct lane.
Look for the blue sign with the person holding out their hand.
Another Meteora rebalated question: even if a monastery is closed, can you still walk up to & look at it from the outside?
Another Meteora rebalated question: even if a monastery is closed, can you still walk up to & look at it from the outside?
Yes, but it's not that you can walk up to it, but from the main road and at certain viewpoints along the road, you can see the a monastery either in the distance or across the ravine.
So if it is closed, then you can’t ascend the stairs to just walk around the outside? The reason I ask is that we are going there on Thursday, April 24 & the Agia Triada is closed on Thursdays. I was just wondering if we could go up there to see the outside up close.
For that specific monastery, probably not. The stairs at the base of the mountain/rock up to the monastery would be closed, so there would no way to access/climb to the top. Remember, the whole purpose of building monasteries atop the rocks was to prevent invaders from raiding it, and that includes tourists. And the monks would want their privacy on the days they are closed. The best you could get is that iconic view from the main road.
That’s what I figured, thank you.
Awesome! Thank you so much!
