Looking for great Restaurants

I have 9 days in Athens and Rhodes and Hydra and I’m not a much of a seafood fan. What are some great restaurants and what dishes outside of the ordinary gyros suvlaki dolmathes should I try?

Another vote for Mani Mani in Athens. The restaurant is near the Acropolis in a neoclassical building. There offerings feature the local cuisine of the Lakonian Mani- European, Greek, & Mediterranean. We were there a few years ago and they required reservations. We were in Athens 5 nights and ate there 3 times.

In Hydra we enjoyed Veranda Restaurant. The restaurant is situated on the rooftop of an old Hydra’s house having stunning views of the harbor. They feature classic Italian and Greek flavors. Nice variety of dishes. Required reservations.

Edited to add: Another favorite in Athens is
Psaras, in the Plaka. aka “The old tavern of Psaras.” It dates back to 1898. The food was excellent and the outdoor seating was unique. Some tables are placed on steps. Psaras-taverna.gr

We also loved Mani Mani in Athens. We called late afternoon and were able to get a reservation for six that evening.

When we were there, we found out that Mani Mani even made their own wine. We liked it so much we brought two bottles home with us!

I will add that Mani Mani’s own wine was excellent! Our tour guide ordered it for our group the last night we were in Athens.

We liked Mani Mani too. Ate there twice. My only negative comment is this is not a view restaurant. So don’t go expecting views of the Acropolis lit up at night.

Check out the Psiri District in Athens. Right behind Athinas St.

More locals tend to go there which usually means more authentic Greek Food.

I've eaten at a number of the tavernas there.

One of my favorites is Atlantiko in Psiri. Located on a back alley, no traffic and some of the best and least expensive food.

You can check out my photos of Greek Food and Tavernas in Athens and everywhere else I've been to in Greece.

Our favourite restaurant in Hydra (in fact, in all of Europe) was Xeri Elia Douskos. No website, but I think it shows up in the map in RS' book. Or you can ask the locals (there are no addresses in Hydra anyway). You sit in a little square under the shade of a tree. A local duo plays traditional Greek music. We had appetizers, meal, wine, dessert and a digestif, and the total bill for two people came to EUR 35 (about $50).

Seafood is the best part of Greek cuisine, but if that's not your thing, make sure you try some lamb chops.
